CPU on stock settings and stock cooler, but it overheats.

Thread Starter
What to do? The CPU is AMD Phenom x4 945 (3.0GHZ).

It overheats on stock cooler and speed after 3 years of using it. What to do? Dust is not an issue as I've already picked out all dusts out of the CPU fan and I can't see how it affects the CPU as there is no visible dust blocking the airflow of cooler.

Will warranty cover me for this?

Plus, the CPU overheats when playing the game. It has never happened on me in past, even on crysis. But now it keeps overheating, even on L4D2 game.

It's really sad to use the stock hunk of aluminum, drop a few Quid on something like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus.

Anyway, if you don't want to go that route remove the heatsink and clean the existing thermal paste off the base of the heatsink and CPU. You can use something like isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel. After both the heatsink and CPU are clean and dry, go ahead and apply some fresh thermal paste of your choice and reseat the heatsink. That should give you a decent drop in temps. Also you can make sure there is good airflow around the CPU area. Cute sig rig by the way.

sounds like the thermal compound has lived it's life.
as said above after market cooler,
zalman 9500 or above
cm 212
xigmatek gia or loki
thermal compounds
artic silver $10.00
tx-11 $7.00
these are the best of what i have used.

So I don't have to buy new cooler (I rather to have TIM than cooler but I can buy new cooler if it seriously affects my CPU at stock speed).

Also, can you point me a link to a reliable and UK website that sells both TIM and isopropyl alcohol.

Id agree with some new paste, making sure your fans not clogged as well while your at it, and as stated above an aftermarket unit can be had pretty cheap and would help even at stock speeds....though I understand your not wanting to buy one based on that

Yes, most likely you just need to change TIM. Worth trying anyway - since if you will eventually need to buy new cooler you need new TIM smile.gif

Is your current cooler still spinning the normal RPMs? Maybe it is also going out. Just a thought.
