Water vs air?

Would the corsair h100 work?

Is a custom loop the only viable option?

You could do it with a Hyper 212+

That will work if OP has a good chip that doesn't require too much
voltage to hit 5Ghz.

Its a bit dependent on your chip and how hot it gets. Some chips might need a large voltage to get 5GHz in which you probably need water, some chips won't even get 5GHz. A good air cooler will probably get you there wink.gif
post #6 of 17
You do not need water to just reach 5ghz unless your chip is a total dog and requires tons of voltage. I am sure you can find this out quite quickly by seeing how far you can push your chip on stock volts.

As for the guy recommending that you can do it with a hyper212+ that is pretty unlikely seeing as hyper212+ even with push pull gets kinda hot at around 4.5ghz with a decent chip.

My chip posted @ 5.9ghz but wouldn't load windows.

Alright then. Does that mean with an h100 I can go higher than 5 ghz?

EDIT: more practically, does that mean I can get a decent 4-5 years from an i5 at 5 ghz with an h100?

That case with the Hyper212+ getting hot @ 4.5Ghz must have terrible airflow or it must be a really bad chip. There are quite a few people that hit 5.0Ghz with a decent air cooler (I did it w/ my old H212+). It really depends more on your chip than the cooler though - if it's a good chip a Hyper212+ will be fine.
