DUAL 8 PIN CPU POWER CONNECTORS on Rampage III Extreme - Page 3

post #21 of 36
The AX850 does, indeed, require you to take up one of the PCI-E connectors on the PSU side to use the second EPS connector.

If your going to be running 3 way SLI, You wont be able to use the second 8pin for the CPU Unless you either get a molex adapter for your GPU's or Your CPU plug.. Or just run the single 8pin, Like i said, You only need that second 8pin CPU plug for EXTREME overclocking and benching..

I would consider that extreme.. You might have to source a different PSU that supports 3 way SLI along with the 2 8pin CPU plugs, Unless you want to run a molex adapter for one of your 6/8pin GPU plugs.

post #26 of 36
If your case supports two PSU's then it's just as simple as running one PSU..

They make special adapters, or I suppose you could manually short it (though it's not a great idea)

try this on for size

just mount the second PSU in your case (or out of it if there's not two slots) and plug both 24 pins in here. simple as that.

A few things need to be cleared up here. As pointed in that link, an EPS 8-Pin can deliver up to 300W. And the Gulftown is rated to have a 130W TDP as you can see here;

http://ark.intel.com/products/52585/Intel-Core-i7-990X-Processor-Extreme-Edition-%2812M-Cache-3_46-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI%29

An OC can only add up 50-100W of more power. So you won't come close to what a single connector can deliver.

One more thing, you don't anywhere need two PSU's. The AX1200 is more than enough. Have a look at here:

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-580-3-way-sli-review/14

Their OC'ed i7 Nehalem setup with CCFL's peaked to 993W, running FurMark from the wall. Convert AC to DC power, take off 100W. And at least an another 50W for their extras. You will continously pull 800-900W with that setup. You won't even hit a kW.

All that you have are sufficient for your machine. You don't need anything more. Too much overexaggeration in this thread.
