I tried Gnome3 for about 30 minutes.

I spent most of that time trying to get addons to work to make it usable. I gave up.

I can't fathom how they figured that UI was at all usable. It's just such crap.

I did a few things with a ubuntu as a server. Then I updated and it would no longer boot without monitor attached I tried to fix this by editing some files and now I can't get into it at all. It does boot now though without monitor but can't get into it with VNC or with a monitor attached now. I plan to move all the files off and setup a windows server as soon.

But yes, the ThinkPads do have good battery life, especially if you've got a big ass battery to go along with it.

Hmm... talk about a tangent from the original topic.
By that same logic: I run OSX on my Thinkpad and it's battery life is lower than with Windows. Therefore Windows is better for battery life than OSX.

Of course I don't really mean to say that it is, I'm just saying that your example isn't really proof of anything because there are a million other variables at play.

That's not using the same logic that I was using. I was not saying that using OSX always improves battery life or that because there is an improvement in one situation that we can draw generalised conclusions about it such as what you just said. I was saying that using a combination of hardware, drivers and OS that have been properly tweaked to work well together improves battery life. This is obviously the case with OSX on the MBP (walled gardens make it simple to do), and it's probably the case to a lesser extent on the ThinkPads. My main point was that the OS is a major factor for battery life. It is by no means the only factor.
