NAS for ESXi

Thread Starter
I'm going to be building two hosts for a home lab running vSphere 5. Looking for any recommendations for a NAS that is compatible with ESXi. This is just for a home lab use, so doesn't need to be high end, but not wanting bottom of the barrel either. I already have my VCA-DT, now looking to get my VCP.

Suggestions?

Any NFS V3 NAS will work. However, make sure your ESXi install has support for your NIC.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you'll get much better performance from an iSCSI device.

I would not buy a normal standard SATA NAS. The standard performance of a 7200rpm disk is not good for the disk contention of virtual machines. if you have to get a SATA NAS (cost) buy a NAS and populate it with caviar blacks, or if you can afford it, Raptors (600GB version available).

SAS disks would obviouly be a lot better but that's gonna get really expensive for the disks and the NAS.

For a SATA NAS, i'd be looking toward a Synology or Buffalo device, with 2 1Gb/s connection minimum, assuming you can accomodate them that is, a Gb switch doesn't cost too much anyway.

A Buffalo TeraStation III iSCSI NAS (single gGb NIC) will cost you about 400-450GBP without disks and would be great, but may be too expensive. Although think of what you'll get out of it when you have your VCP. You can pick up used WD raptor 300Gb for about 50GBP if your lucky enough.

If you don't mind splashing out, the Thecus N7700SAS allows up to 7 SAS or SATA conenctions and provides excellent performance.

on the cheaper end you could look at QNAP, they provide some good money vs performance NAS. Not sure of any models off the top of my head though.

If this is just for additional storage to host virtual disks in a lab, then have you considered just getting a PCI RAID controller, configure a new array and add it as a datastore? just another option, but takes out the network bottlekneck.

No exact answers but hope this helps.
