GTX 580 SLI concerns/issue

Thread Starter
Well I got my second 580 in today, was excited to test out SLI, but am ending up kind of frustrated/confused..

Testing in various games, specifically BF3..

I'm only getting about 60/70ish FPS on Medium/High settings with AA set to medium.

GPU usage on both cards seem way to low as well anywhere from 30 to 40% a card.

To be honest I was getting nearly the same performance with 1 580 before this.. what could possibly be wrong..

As you see both cards are being used, I have to assume SLI is properly enabled and functioning.

Suggestions:-
1. Make sure you are using 285.62 driver
2. Make sure the Vsync is off.

your AMD Phenom II 1090T is holding you back, need an intel processor with Nvidia GTX580's in sli to avoid the heavy bottleneck. issue with your 1090T is its a hex core so at best only 4 cores are used in game and your 4 cores are significantly slower than an intel i5's cores would be.

might also have something to do with BF3 being pretty new and needs time for sli drivers to improve and mature before the frames start to increase.

I am using the 285.62 drivers, and vsync is definitely off.. I've tried switching sli bridges to see if that would do any good, no difference.

I think the cpu bottleneck is part of it, but I dont think it would cause the 40-50% usage on the 2nd 580. Reinstall drivers including msi afterburner or any of that stuff.

Did re-install, both cards are still sitting at 45-50% max use in game

Further suggestions:-
1. Turn on the Visual SLI Indicator (in NVCP) and see if the green bar moves nicely all the way to the top and bottom

2. As far as CPU bottleneck is concerned, I doubt this is the case with your Phenom II X6 1090T at 4GHz. The review below shows that a stock Phenom II X6 1100T can handle GTX570 SLI without problem. Even though their tested resolution is 2560x1600 while yours is 1920x1080 and yours is a pair of GTX580 (vs their GTX570s), I doubt this factor alone can make a big difference.

If you wish to test this out, simply run your CPU at 3, 3.4, 3.8 and 4GHz and see if the framerate increases.

Will try this..

Thought Id mention this as im currently testing random stuff in BF3.. I've decided to set everything to ultra just to see what happens..

This is what happened after that.. I can look to the left of me where the view distance is fairly short and there isnt much going on and my gpu usage flies up 85/85% on both cards.. then Ill look right where the view distance is substantial and cards both drop to 35/40% usage.. does that make any sense...

With the SLI Indicator its no different that MSI.. bars go up to about half way or so, since usage is at 50/50 on both cards.. Im really confused as to what could be going on.

-Edit- : I decided to try and run Bad company 2, everything on high, HBAO, MSAA x 16..

both GPU's at a solid 80-90% getting 130-150 frames constantly... could it just be a problem with BF3? or what..

-Edit #2- Okay I did a bit more research and apparently this is a known issue in BF3.. pages upon pages of people on Nvidia forums having this exact same issue.. Kind of disappointing that I have to wait for a patch =(
