as for the other purpose, the 1090T is a better solution
I hate you man, I was reading through this thread and I was like, OMG NEEDS THE TOMS ARTICLE.

Very nice slap to the face for everyone imo,

I like Tom's discussion about it. Bf3 doesnt care, it just doesnt care xD. as long as you aren't running a celeron or a sempron I think everyone is fine lawl.

^ What? I don't do shooters or anything like that. I stream PS2 games with Xsplit as my streaming application and use the PS2 emulator, PCSX2.

No sir not to you, but others were contesting this. I was just happy this was clarified, there is a misconception that BF3 is cpu dependent, when in reality it isn't

Okay guys. I'm going to the store right now. One last time. Which processor would you recommend? 1090T, 980 BE, or BD FX 6100?

I got the 1090T instead of the FX8150 for two reasons:

Its cheaper
I clocked mine to 4.2ghz @1,45vcore stable, come on, isn't that sexy.

Why get a 4 core when you can get a 6 core which clocks better? Those saying that you should get a 4 core is wrong in my opinion, the x6 thuban is the x4 phenom IIs just with 2 more cores on it (and some small improvements).

You'd be better off with a x6, that is, looking forward, as everyone here should do.

And stop being so narroweyed, when buying a new CPU you can't base your decision on one benchmark, look on the whole picture, not a little part of it.

Might as well get the 1090T if the choice is between those two. If buying a quad, I'd take a 965 over the 980 since they'll OC similarly and the former is cheaper.

Go with the 1090T, it's perfect for your needs.

The higher clocked chips are binned higher. Typically they have a better chance for higher overclock. I went with the 980 BE because as of now there's 1 game that can actually utilize more than 4 cores effectively. I felt the 980 BE would have a strong overclock potential and I was right. I'm at 4.4Ghz right now and trying for 4.5Ghz but I don't think I've got enough cooling as once temps get warm it drops stability. This is also on an older GD70 790FX board.

I had the same question for awhile, 1090T or 980... I eventually went with the 1090T. I may not always need the 2 extra cores, but its nice to have them when something might want to use them. Plus the 1090T under decent cooling should be able to give you about 4Ghz. I live in AZ so its regularly hot, so the OC over the summer is less but I plan to go to 4Ghz+ this winter.

To others with a similar question, just go with the 1090T. Its a good chip. The other chip I would look at is the 960T. It was not available when I picked up my 1090T and I do not regret the purchase, but does interest me.

As more reviews come out I would advise avoiding Bulldozer for a gaming rig. I think the chips are bugged. Some games don't even run at all and other games run really poorly. Of course most games seem to run fine, but you're better with something else. Bulldozer is Barcelona all over again.

exactly.
To be fair, their testing methodology was single player. Multiplayer is a different beast altogether - far more demanding on the CPU. That being said, Denebs and Thubans are certainly fast enough to provide a more than acceptable performance at high settings. The Mesh Quality setting is a real CPU killer, though, and my advice is to turn it down to medium or high with Phenom processors because at Ultra you will get slowdowns.
