Yeah, bad idea. Just use your onboard AMD ports. Make 110% sure its the native AMD ports. Even if its only a 3Gb/s port, it'll outperform something else with so much latency due to being external.
I used my Marvell ports (also claim 6Gb/s), but I was only getting 190MB/s sequential from my drive, and random lock ups every 2 seconds or so. The drive was performing WORSE than my old RAID0 of mech drives.
Swapped it over to my native Intel ports (6Gb/s) and everything is now working BEAUTIFULLY. I tried it on a 3Gb/s port, and I honestly can't even tell a difference between the two. The Marvell port, being extra latency because its not the native port (I forget why), was just horrible though.
Seriously, even on your native 3Gb/s ports, it'll be amazingly fast.
