help OC C2D E6600

Thread Starter
hey guys
this is my first system im trying to overclock so im pretty noobish but basically im using a core 2 duo e6600 and im trying to overclock it so i can run bf3.
i got it to 3ghz and was playing battlefield 3 and everything was fine. today i went to play and the game would crash every 5 minutes. ran prime95 and it found errors. i switched all the bios options back to auto and ran prime95 for about 90 minutes and there was 0 errors. after about an hour the game crashed and i ran prime95 again and it then found errors pretty quick.. iv since been fiddling and i just feel like im going in circles. i purchased a new heatsink this morning so theres new thermal paste and everything. but also i got a bsod today which i never get.. the error was "memory management", memtest86 found nothing. seeing as this is my first time OCing im not sure about fiddling with voltages and everything.. but i have bumped the vcore up and it still doesnt fix the problem.

my system specs are...

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz
Memory: 6GB DDR2 6400 (2GB Corsair XMS2, 4GB OCZ)
Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus
Video Card: ATI Radeon Sapphire HD 6850 1GB
PSU: Thermaltake 850W ToughPower
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

i have the cpu set to 1333, it is unlinked to the memory.. the ram i have set at 800mhz.. and all the timings are set to auto. i just ran prime95 and it froze after about 3 passes. at max load the cpu runs around 50C .. if anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated, thanks

OK so,

You've unlinked the memory which is right, i'd go in and manually set your memory timing to the rated speeds.

As for your FSB, I think that's meant to be set to 1066 and not 1333, if you look at http://ark.intel.com/products/27250/...066-MHz-FSB%29 this confirms that.

What sort of speed are you trying to get out of your processor?

Also, what's the multiplier on that?

Comps

P.S Your PSU is miles overkill for your system, this is going to make your PSU inefficient.

the multipliers at 9. setting the cpu fsb to 1066 is the stock speed, 1333 puts it at 3ghz. im aiming for around 3ghz.

are you upping your Vcore accordingly?

You need to also set your FSB memory clock moded to unlinked.

That might help

i now have it unlinked, cpu fsb is 1333, mem is 800. i currently have the vcore at auto but will have a play with that

Run IBT and prime and see how that fairs, it could have been pushing the memory too much.

Raise it up to 1600 fsb and 1.400v on the cpu. that will get you to 3.6ghz. I was running my old e6600 at that speed.
