Replacing my AT&T Router?

Thread Starter
I wanted to replace my AT&T Router, which is just to slow for me, for at-least a Wireless N Router. Would I have to contact AT&T or just replace the router?

AT&T has been using their 2701HG-B Router seems forever. I have it as a DSL internet only. Motarola I think.

2wire 2701 is crap. AT&T is rolling out a new B90 model, I haven't seen enough of them to have an opinion though. Your best bet for DSL is to get a third party modem, then use a tethered router.

Thanks. Yes the 2701 are "underwhelming", which is why I am posting here on DJHarter75's thread. i think he knows less than I do, and I know little enough.

I suppose a "tethered" router is one using the 2701 as the "gateway/connection" and the "third party" as the "in use" hardware.???

I've heard good things about Alpha and Cisco, good/bad about Asus by model. any explainations or criteria for choices would be helpful to both of us.
Any idea of a reasonable price to pay??

by tethered i mean, get a standalone modem and then use a good router connected to it. AT&T sells the motorola 2210 and the westell 6100 modems, either are ok. I have no experience with the actiontec modem, but I have heard that it works better than the AT&T ones.
