Thread Starter
i was just trying to select the ram for my htpc and wondering how important the speed is, its to go with an i3 2100, GT220, asus h61-m mobo,. would i see much gain 1333 vs 1600Mhz? also how much is 2 gb ok or should i go 4-8 for future proofing since its fairly cheap now?confused.gif

you would not see any difference from 1600mhz ram unless you are overclocking, as the i3 doesnt support over 1333 natively if I remember correctly.

1333 vs 1600 shouldn't matter much at all for everyday use, especially on an htpc. 2gb would work, but I would grab 4 just because I have found Win 7 to always seem to run a little sluggish with only 2gb of ram.
oh yeah forgot about the second part. windows 7 loves having extra Ram. I upgraded my laptop from 4GB to 8GB recently and windows caches up twice as much memory and the whole system runs a lot better (idles at 4GB of ram used because of caching), so I would say get at least 8GB of ram

2gb is cutting it close and you might as well just go ahead and get 4gb since ram prices are so cheap now. you will not need 8gb.

Your motherboard doesn't support 1600 memory, so that's an entirely moot discussion.

As for quantity, I've never heard someone complain about having too much, but a truckload dismayed by not having enough; as you mentioned, RAM is cheap now, so definitely go for more.

If it's a typical Web PC with no specialized usage....there's little to none discernible difference.

For HTPC more is better than faster. The i3 will limit the speed to 1333 anyway. So buy piles of cheap slow memory.
