GTX 580 (NO OC) crash in BF3

Thread Starter
I have a weird problem. My GTX580 never crash in any game, except in BF3 it always does.

I'm running my card on the stock speed and voltage (772mhz 1.025v). It's defenitly the card that is crashing by the way, not the game. What happens is this : the game freeze, i see green dots on my screen, and then it brings me back to my desktop. In MSI afterburner, the GPU fan goes back to normal speed, and to idle core speed. Basically, it does exactly what a GPU does when it crashes because of an unstable OC, except that my GPU isnt OCed at all.

Few constatations :

-It happens ONLY in BF3, and it happens both with 285.38 and 285.62 drivers.
-It didn't happend at all in the BF3 beta.
-It doesn't happens in any other game (BC2 maxed out, Heaven benchmark 2.5 maxed out, L4D2)
-If i increase the stock voltage of 1.025 to 1.038, the GPU is now stable in BF3

So, what's the deal ? Is my GPU defective or not ? shouldn't it be stable in any games on the stock voltage ? Why do i have to change the stock voltage when i play BF3 to stop my GPU crashing ?

It is time for an RMA ?

Do you leave your PC on at night or not shut it down regularly? A friends GTX 580 did the same thing, if he left the PC on over the course of a couple days it seemed to become unstable and a quick shut down for 5-10minutes would fix the issue.

What are the temps like in BF3? i'd jack the fan speed up to 80% since it's not that loud and see if it fixes your problem.

I havent checked but do you use onboard audio? Is it a Realtek card? I had some crashes and it was due to the same old Punkbuster vs Realtek battle. I had a spare audio card laying around.. Installed it .. disabled onboard audio and crashing stopped completely.

EDIT: Yes you have a realtek chip on that board. Worth a try.

By the sounds of it, you're describing an unstable overclock where BF3 seems to be better as a stress-tester than other games and benchmarks. Of course, this is your stock configuration so it then tells me PNY didn't set the correct voltage for your card's stock. This is of course inexcusable but anyway every individual card needs its own individual voltage to operate. It looks to me as if PNY should have opted for a higher stock voltage in all their GTX 580 cards to ensure no one has this issue.

I would therefore suggest you increase the voltage to your 1038 mV and leave it there permanently. It's a perfectly good voltage and if it's stable, it's stable. You've done PNY's job for them, essentially. They should have just shipped all their GTX 580 cards with 1038 mV as stock voltage, it seems.

An RMA might also fix the issue since as luck of the draw goes, you might get a replacement that essentially requires less voltage for stock clock speeds, thus circumventing the problem altogether. Or also as luck of the draw goes, you might get one that requires the same voltage as this one or even more, again causing this issue!

P.S. The green dots crash is related to an unstable memory overclock, not an unstable GPU overclock - in my first-hand experience. A GPU overclock would cause the screen to go black and then you'd be booted to the desktop where the NVIDIA drivers "stopped responding but recovered".

I totally concur. I had the same problem, crash and hardlock every 15 minutes or so. Upped the core to 1.1V (watercooled) and now I have no issues whatsoever.

This just started with me at stock settings since i installed the newest driver 301.42, the 301 beta driver had no issues with even with a mean OC.

yep minor voltage bump off stock seems to do the trick....
