Ssd windows install

Thread Starter
Im doing a new build with a Crucial M4, windows 7... and basically i was wondering is there anything i need to do to prepare the SSD for the clean install of window, ive read something about AHCI.... but i havent got a clue....

Is it worth putting the SSD in then installing windows then once windows is up and running putting my secondary storage hardrive in.... so there is no confusion during installation...

When you need to update your M4 to the newest 0009 firmware (which should be done first), you need to have the drive in IDE mode.

After the update, set it to AHCI and install windows. There isn't a real reason to do it with your other hard drives out besides making sure you don't install to the wrong drive.
Install, then get the Intel Rapid Storage technology application to speed up your drive a step further.
You should also turn off your hybernation file which would be like 16GB in your case >_<
Go to start menu, search for CMD.EXE and run as administrator, then type powercfg -h off and press Enter.

That's all that I really had to do on my drive to get it to run optimally.

I highly recommend moving your user folders to a mechanical hard drive. It will help you keep your ssd lean and mean. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...-location.html

Also, disable hibernation as a previous poster said and turn off system resstore.

your guide while very informative also had me wondering things too... as far as if you have a new computer etc... though I have to wiat for my SSD, just reordered it today. It seems like a lot of work to go through to get the SSD up and running, Why can you not just do a regular install? Or is this for extreme performance? I am curious here as I too will be reinstalling once my Drive comes in.... or should I take a disk image from my Current HDD and use that to get the SSD working or is there some issues with doing that?

first thing in my guide I explain to you is this.

Quote:
"SSD's do NOT require the confusing and intense setup that a lot of people seem to suggest. The current day SSD's are much more reliable then the first generation and do not need to be treated like a box full of glass cups. Literally all that is necessary is to change in the BIOS IDE -> AHCI and you are good to go."

I have the above stated for a reason, people tend to be afraid that their SSD is going to die if they don't do any tweaks to it, some don't even consider getting one because they think it will be a pain to maintain. The above statement is the truth. An SSD isn't so "sensitive," newer ones will last a user years and still be nowhere near its max write capabilities. So please don't think you have to do anything special if you are considering getting one.
The guide is just if you want to follow it, tweak, and learn something new

If you want you can do a disk image. I would do the alignment then put the disk image on. But it is always better to do a complete reinstall.
