Help with Creative Control Panel Software

Thread Starter
I recently picked up a Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 USB (SB1090) to upgrade from onboard sound (no available slots in a mini-itx).

Any settings/configuration would also help. I was told to turn CMS-3D Surround on for gaming and off for music, is this correct? Just trying to maximize the sound upgrade (using JVC HA-RX900 headphones if it matters).

In addition to the Creative Control Panel, is there any other Creative Software I should be using to get the best sound for gaming or music?

The available apps for download on the Creative Support site for my device are:

Creative Smart Recorder 2.41.26
Creative ALchemy 1.41.02
Creative Entertainment Center 5.10.21
Creative Console Launcher 2.61.43
Creative Karaoke Player 2.11.08
Creative WaveStudio 7.12.00
Creative MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer 5.26.02
Creative CD Burner Plugin 5.01.44 for Creative MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer

You want ALchemy, but everything else is fluff.

thanks for the tip, this is only going to make a difference in gaming, correct?

I was reading today to turn off all of the effects in the creative control panel when listing to music. is there any truth to this?

ALchemy is actually a replacement for the DirectSound engine in Vista and 7. It allows your computer to utilize the SPU (sound processing unit) on the soundcard rather than the CPU in order to process the sound.

In the control panel, there should be a music setting (IIRC) that does that for you. You'll want those effects disabled when listening to music, because in general you want as little post-processing distortion to your music as possible.

This is the same one I just bought. I can't get the thing to work at all. So frustrating.

If you install the Creative Audio Control Panel, the Creative Console Launcher and ALchemy, those 3 will allow you to turn everything on and off.
I don't use ALchemy. Just way to much involved and too little time to add games manually.

I just plugged it in, it auto detected and worked... then went to the creative site and downloaded the driver.

make sure you get the driver for the 1090 (older version) as opposed to the 1095 which is the Surround Pro.

What exactly does the creative console launcher do?

Gives you an equalizer and mixer. The mixer includes the levels for aux, mic and line in which is nice if you have a mic or aux audio in. It also allows you to put it in game/entertainment/media mode.
The Audio Control Panel gives you the bit-matched options, svm, EAX levels and sampling rate settings. Why they aren't all in one application, I can't tell you.
