New intel rig setup

Thread Starter
Yeah it's been about a year/half since I've been on OCN, I just wanted you guys to know I traded the i7 rig for a Honda CBR600 bike about a year ago and I've been pretty into the mechanic scene since, I just hopped back on today because I think it's about time for a new rig, I'm tired of using a laptop lol.

Of course, I check newegg and see technology for computers has doubled, I'm probably going to go with quad core i7 or equivalent, only for cheaper now! ha.

So what's the new hot **** nowdays?

Looking for the cpu power of a 920 or up, cheaper-better

GPU needs to be able to max out most games, and be able to play the new games (BC3, Skyrim, cod) with gooooood fps

Probably going for 6gb ram or more

Anything new in the cooling market? I had the XigDK and a Corsair H50 last time, both did great (didn't use them at the same time lol.)

Gonna have to check ssd prices, see if they've dropped since 09 lol.
I still have my 1tb from the i7, so that'll be storage. For OS drive it'll be a cheap ssd (if thats even a real thing) or something better or equiv. to the 640mb black

Any deals on monitors? My last one was a 23" 1080p

Ty for the replies overclockers!

i7-2600k + GTX580 + Noctua NH-D14 + corsair dominator 12GB 2000 + EVGA Z68 FTW
A very nice setup that will max most games (metro2033 aside). SSDs are likely a lot cheaper now.

If you can hold on till Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge E mate I definitely would, the new Intel 6 core chips are sure to be powerhouses.

If you are looking to buy now Then 996gt2 has got it pretty much spot on, 2500K coupled with a decent cooler (H80 or H100 perhaps) so you can take it to at least 4.8ghz, 8GB of RipjawsX or Vengeance RAM, Asus P67 Board and a GTX580 (or two) will see you right playing all the latest games.

Welcome back to the overclocking scene

Yeah the WD Blacks are still strong drives. The latest 2TB model is very fast but you'd probably get better results running 2 Samsung F3's in RAID0...it would be cheaper too.

Nice, I'll probably end up RAIDing some blacks then..

6gb of ram was ample for me last time, how's ram prices? Since here at OCN theres no such thing as overkill, would the price difference for 12gb ram be that much more than 6gb? Because we're gonna do it real big this time around

The 6GB and 12GB kits are tri-channel ddr3, for the Sandybridge i7 and i5 setup you're going to need dual channel ddr3, but the prices are pretty good at the moment, a quality 2x4GB kit like this is $55. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231445
