6950 OC worth it ? - Page 2

Thread Starter
ok, did the UNiGiNE test again, this time I left all to default (1st time I put AA to 8x) so setup was

DX11, Stereo 3D disabled, Shaders High, Tessellation Normal, Anisotropy 4, AA off, Full Screen On, Resolution 1920x1080

With 830 Core & 1300 Memory

41 FPS Score 1049, Min FPS 21 Max 88

With 910 Core & 1350 Memory

44 FPS Score 1119, Min FPS 22 Max 96

With Core 920 & Memory 1300

Crashed, tried it twice, crashed twice

So in answer to my original question, is it worth it, hell, for 3 FPS I really dont think so, surely not OC'ing it will actually help it live longer ??

Should I be trying something else ?

Cheers

You're unaware of the possible magic of the 6950 series?
You'll want this tool and atiwinflash
http://www.techpowerup.com/rbe/

Then you load atiwinflash, copy your bios to a file, open it in RBE, hit the 6950->6970 button, save it with a new name, and write it back.

If you have the dual bios switch:

Then if it doesn't work, you shut it down, flip the switch, wait until windows boots, flip the switch back, and re-flash the stock bios that you saved.

If you don't have the switch, then you'll have to blind flash it back, or use another card if it doesn't work.

unlocked shaders + OC = substantial bump. My 6950 is unlocked and running @ 900MHz, compared to a stock 800MHz 6950, that's a 22% bump, if I did my math right.

That doesn't mean it won't unlock, just means it's not stupid easy to fix if it doesn't.

But it might not work on the XXX edition card:

unlocking is 3-5% increase at stock.. = amazing

*most of the time these cards go faster before you unlock them.. the additional SP's dont allow the core to go as fast, and require more power at the same speeds..
hey I have been running a MSI R6950 Twin frozr III PE/OC stock is 850 core 1300 ram, card has unlocked shaders and triple voltage adj in Afterburner.

Benchmarks are one thing, gaming is another, my method is to test for improvement and stability using benchmarks, then PLAY! the best test for improvement is to max out CCC and check actual gaming performance increase.

For me dirt 3 smooths out with CCC maxed and game settings maxed when I OC to 950 core 1400 ram, works fairly well at stock to but get less studder and higher FPS. Only thing that sucks for me is my monitor max's at 1680 x 1050 at 60 Hz, this card can push higher res, so I limit the card with vsync to 60 FPS to match 60 hz refresh rate.

Oh and if ya'all are benching go compete get over to http://www.overclock.net/benchmarkin...ia-vs-ati.html and post up some scores! RED TEAM is losing! Only 1 day left...HELP!

Two lightbulbs at 120v draws more power than 1 lightbulb at 120v...
And more work gets done. Your point?

It's not about how fast it goes, it's about the results.

Your missing my point..

Its not hard to OC these GPU's and achieve a 3-5% improvement in performance, and you can do so without risking bricking the BIOS [if you dont have a dual BIOS switch]. For lower overall power consumption, the GPU will draw less in stock form vs. unlocked.. even in 2D mode + the gains can again be easily achieved from a set OC.

I would have nothing to gain unlocking my 6950..
