[Reuters] Android phone repair cost telcos billions

Costly hardware failures are more common on Android devices than on Apple Inc iPhones and Research In Motion Inc BlackBerry phones, which have strict control over the components used in their devices, WDS data showed.

Cheaper Android models, costing as little as $100 to make, have helped Android emerge as the dominant platform in smartphones, attracting dozens of manufacturers ranging from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd to no-brand Asian vendors.

"While this price point sounds very attractive, when you look at a total cost of ownership its a different story," said Tim Deluca-Smith, Vice President of Marketing at WDS, which offers device management and call center services to operators.

lol.

I'm sure this is going to somehow be spun to be Apple's fault.

AppleCare?

technical support is costing them THAT much? Last I checked 99.99999% of technical support calls were outsourced to either india, singapore or malaysia (just my experience), where they're no doubt paid beans and rice for dollars. I personally think this is just telecom companies making less money on technical support for android devices, hence "losing" money.

Ummmmm.... you get what you pay for?

I have a Droid X2, never had a problem with it. So does the missus, no trouble there either. Before this one I had a Droid X, still have it, works fine, keep it as a back up in case we lose a phone.

Our phones have been dropped, tossed, sat on and more with not a single issue.

You buy a $20 phone made by some "no-brand Asian vendor", you get a $20 phone made by "no-brand Asian vendor".

Deluca-Smith said that, while Android has helped take smartphones to masses of people, it has come at a cost, especially when telecommunications operators roll out cheaper devices from less-known brands.

So the telco's are complaining about how much they are losing in Android phone repairs but it's their fault for using "cheaper devices from less-known brands". I'd like to see the statistics on which actual brands/devices the most repairs are reported for.

Wow, and they try to make it out like this is androids fault and "see look, iphone better"! This is the fault of the person who buys the phone. No, a motorola citrus is NOT going to make it through a 2 year contract. Get a real phone you tards.

Got an HTC Eris two years ago free with a two-year contract. I've never put a case on it, dropped it tons of times, rooted it and it's still chugging away.

Total cost minus contract fees - $0

Android is way too expensive guys.
