New Build! Need help!

Thread Starter
Okay instead of upgrading my current rig I decided to build a new one since I got the money. This is my first build that I'll be doing by myself, so I need some help and suggestions on what to get. This rig is going to be for gaming.

CPU - Intel i5-2500k
MB - Either Asus Maximus IV Gene Z or ASrock Z68 Extrem3 Gen3
RAM - G.Skill Jigsaw Series 8Gb DDR3 1600
PSU - Antec HCP-1200
SSD - Crucial M4 64Gb
CPU Cooler - Antec KUHLER H20 920
GPU - ??

I can't decide what to get on graphics card. I was thinking the gtx 590 but read somewhere that x2 gtx 580's are better? I'm probably goin water cool graphics card also and OC CPU in the future when I learn how first. Also, are those MB's a good choice?
What's the budget and intended use?

How long do you want this to last without having to upgrade?

Is CF/SLI out the gate a problem?

If so, do you want your PSU to support say two GTX 590s?

Since a 1 TB HDD is over $100 right now, do you prefer a 60 or 90GB SSD instead?

Do you need a case or DVD or blu ray drive?

Personally, i am a fan of Asus motherboards, so of those two, I would pick the Asus. Also note that the Maximus IV gene-z has 3 pcie slots only, and with two air cooled gtx 580 cards, you wont have any expansion slots left.

One gtx 590 is slower than two gtx 580s because the gtx 590 is clocked lower to allow more headroom in the stock cooler primarily, which won't matter as much for water cooling.

I would try to get the 580's because a single 590 = 2 underclocked 570's, and the 580s are well, 580s.

The motherboard is fine, it's the one i will use for my m-atx build.

The PSU is a little overkill, 1200w is much more than enough. Heck, a 850 or 950 will take on 2x 580's or 590 fine.

Well I'm loooking to spend about 1500-2k. I'm goin use my old HD with the new SSD. Also I'm just going to use the same case I have now along with the DVD driver. So what would be best motherboard for say two gtx 580s water cooled?

I prefer going the HD 6870 crossfire route, instead of the 580 SLI. It's A LOT cheaper, and you lose very little performance.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforc...0-sli-review/6

Largest FPS gap: http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforc...0-sli-review/9

$660 saved compared to SLI 580s.

Throw in like a GTX 460 for PhysX or whatever is best for added performance.

I upgraded:

The CPU to 2600k and SSD to 120GB OCZ Agility 3. Could obvioulsy upgrade to the 2700k if wanted and still be well within the budget or perhaps still under it.

I threw in the 1000w PSU, because I wasn't sure what you'd need and it was a great price and a brand new PSU from Kingwin. Whose PSUs lately have been very good and very well reviewed by Jhonny Guru. I assume the 1000w will be plenty, since you can run two 6870s on 550w, so you should have a lot of headroom for a liquid cooled system. At least I'd hope so...

It's $116 under your minimum budget w/out $60 in optional mail in rebates.

I probably would have changed the Mobo too, but I figured you may use the other PCI inputs and the budget was still way under, so why not.
Here's what I came up for you:

You did change the motherboard. The one I got priced is 124.99. I'll probably drop the 1200w psu then and get either a 1000 or 850. What's the difference between the 6870 and 580s?

Ohh... The mobo seemed to be the same, I just never looked and assumed with this budget that was the mobo.

I assume that's the one you're talking about. Yeah, I'd recommend that one instead. I figured before you just wanted several PCI slots.

The total then comes out to: $1,236.91

As for the 6870 vs 580, I posted SLI/CF benchmarks above. I think the two major differences is that the 580 is slightly better and I believe uses more power? Not sure off the top of my head, but it is slightly better, but not worth the price tag. Like I said, there is a $660 price difference between dual HD 6870s and dual GTX 580s. Oh, also the GTX 580 supports 3D. I'm unsure if ATI/AMD has 3D support yet.

Another difference I believe, is that the GTX 580 SLI, performs better at bigger resolutions.

It really only matters if you're doing more than 1080p on a game like Metro 2033. You maybe able to pull off 30 fps @ 2560x1600 with CF 6870s overclocked with image quality settings maxed out, in DX11 mode and have AAA anti-aliasing activated.
