Upgrading, help needed.

Ok so right now my current system is the one listed below(all up-to-date). So my friend says that i should go for a new monitor instead of a 2nd 6870 claiming that my CPU is holding me back at my small resolution. (1280x1024) And that i will actually get better performance since my 6870 could do more at a higher res. What does everyone else think?

Your CPU should not be holding you back. That is a well-performing quad core you got there. In terms of gaming, most games can be ran just fine on a nice dual core.

What games are you playing and what FPS are you getting? Also, is there a budget you are on?

If you aren't getting terrible FPS, I would go for a better monitor then.

I was getting about 40 FPS on completely maxed BF3 (during beta). And i get lowish on shogun 2 but thats mabye because that games is dam hard to run at max.

Would getting a bigger res monitor yield any FPS increase though? not comparing to a 2nd 6870.

Well getting a higher res monitor will require more GPU processing power. The higher the res, the more the GPU has to work. This means that you will see a FPS decrease if you get a higher resolution monitor.

So you can either get a larger monitor and probably dip into the 30s FPS in BF3
or...
Grab another 6870 and have great FPS.

The choice is up to you. I personally try to avoid multi-card setups at all costs. While they can be great for performance, they often can have driver issues and some games do not utilize the crossfire.

^ Agree. I would go with a larger monitor and in a worst case scenario of hitting FPS that are a bit low for your liking, just turn off some AA features in the game that don't make a huge difference to regain your FPS.

I am with AMD955 - a 1920x 1080 or 1920x1200 is so much fun to game on.
The WOW! factor really goes up. You can always try for higher overclocks on the cpu and gpu to keep the fps up until you can etiher go xfire or get a newer gpu.

Nothing noticeable.

But I agree with others for the monitor
