Monitors in portrait mode for browsing?

Thread Starter
Is it really worth it? Been getting into casual Eve and a few other chilled games. I use the LCD screen on my G15 to keep in touch with OS stuff and background apps but the idea of a small compact second monitor purely for web browsing and leaving my 27" monitor for full screen gaming. Am I likely to see a drop in performance on my 5870 doing? Also, it's worth mentioning this new monitor would be the 3rd output. I already have my HDMI output mirroring my main monitor output to the living room big screen, although I should add I neve run these monitors at the same time.
I see peeps with portrait web browsing monitors and it seems such a great option to have.

it's more than worth it. it's underrated.

I used to do it. Now that I have a 30" there really isn't room, but if I ever get a bigger place I may set it up that way again.

I have a 24" main monitor and a 19.5" in portrait. I really like the setup, while gaming I use it to see temps and usage stats. Other than that It's very convenient for editing portrait photos, reading long text documents and programming. You shouldn't see a drop in gaming performance.

In normal mode, I have 2 monitors in portrait. I'd have all three in portrait all the time, but the landscape one is useful for youtube. It's surprising how many things are better in portrait. Many things are designed for a 1280 max, sometimes smaller, width anyway, so most monitors suffice even in portrait.

I see peeps with portrait web browsing monitors and it seems such a great option to have.
I absolutely cannot go back to not having portrait mode for various web-related things and for reading/writing.

I find in particular that I enjoy browsing forums and email and social network sites a lot more on portrait mode. You see a ton of content faster and I browse a lot of sites at the same time. I even have autoscroll on some. It's amazing. You just chill back and it does everything. I'll play a game sometimes while websites autoscroll in portrait mode so I can still follow things to the second while blasting things online.

One thing I noticed that is a problem in Windows: you can run out of memory fast with lots of displays. I found that on my single HD5850, when I ran things like netflix, games, etc, with a lot of browser tabs (over 12) open and other apps running (photoshop, music player, etc), I would sometimes get reset to basic theme due to "lack of resources." I've sense changed it up to where I have some cheap little Fermi 520 cards that have 2G of VRAM (they were like $40 each). I got two of them. They control my peripheral monitors. My HD5850 controls my central monitor (strictly for gaming). I no longer get bombed to basic. You can totally go beyond what a single 1G card can handle with windows when you get a lot of displays with Aero going.

Try it out. Just flip it and browse your websites. When I use certain websites without portrait mode, I feel like I can't read half what I'm trying to read at once (browsing topics, scrolling forever to find something, etc).

Very best,

MalVeauX your headphone setup makes me jelly

I just bought an E-MU 0404 USB for my DAC, probably wait for a good deal on a used Valhalla and DT990 on head-fi.

One thing I would say if you're getting a monitor for portrait is to go for IPS.

TN panels have horrible shift in portrait mode, even if you move your head a couple of inches the whole screen can darken.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to start looking into IPS models and see what can be had on a budget (budget and IPS tend not to go hand in hand in my experience!).

The LG IPS231P-BN is a really cheap (~£160) uh-ips monitor which can rotate 90 degrees.

Most go for dell's U2311H at this price range, but it's only actually a 6-bit panel, whereas the LG is 8-bit. The dell panel has been noted for better backlight uniformity, though, and it's CCFL as opposed to LG's W-LED.

However, it depends how much you want to focus on quality.
