MINI or MICRO NAS Build

Thread Starter
Its so hard to build a mini NAS. I basically plan on putting three 2TB F3/F4's in Raid 5 w freenas. This is what I've come up with. Both boards have raid 5.

I was thinking about getting this Micro NAS but this case is only 3" inches shorter than my antec 902 its a Fat case, and i'm pretty sure it uses more power than the D510:

micro.jpg

but I'm really settled with this build I just want to know what you guys think:

mini.jpg

I chose this as it has 6 satas, onboard raid 5, and basically allows me to add three more drives in the future. I was gonna go for this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500055

but i found that i need raid 5 and from a recent review on newegg that zotac board isnt good for a nas.

One direct question I have is about the power supply I see a 380 watt green psu is about the lowest available. But i really want a modular psu and all the modlar psu's start at about 500W. So will the NAS consume more power even though I'll have only 3 HD's connected to the 500W PSU vs. 3 connected to the 380W PSU? Here are the PSU's:

thanks for the input!!

Those Lian Li cases are great. I have the V354B myself and it can fit quite a bit. See my sig link for the details.

The parts you've chosen seem sufficient for me in terms of a micro NAS build.

The NAS will not consume more power if you use a higher wattage rated PSU. If you could get a higher rated PSU it will only mean you will have more headroom and capacity for any possible future upgrades smile.gif

wow the v354b is not that big. I was looking at the dimensions and the only major difference from my antec 902 was 3" in height. I'm def getting a modular PSU know.. Now I have to choose between the micro or mini build...hmmmmm The micro is certainly more flexible.

Another case option that supports ITX, is the Chenbro case. It supports up to 4 HDs and all are hot swappable.

Hello
What about the lianli q25B -> Linky Here

Ive just got the case and it is great. lots of room for up to 7 hdd

or the Fractal Design Array R2 ->Linky

Both cases would be great for a NAS build and both micro itx.

Definitely FreeNAS. It's has ZFS so you don't have to use the crappy onboard RAID controller. NexentaStor is also supposedly good and people say it's faster than FreeNAS but I haven't tried it myself.

Ya definitely another +1, for Freenas. Its support and community are a great addition to the already well put together OS/Application.
