No sound from my Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 USB

Installed it, loaded up the software, everything on the disc but the outdated drivers which I installed from their website (newest). The power is on, cables are correct, (I think) volume is up, device is selected in device manager. Onboard is disabled. I hate sound cards. I really, truly do. I've never had one that I was truly happy with. Can anyone point me in the right direction here ? It's this thing. Why did I buy it ? IDK. Apparently, I'm an idiot.

with creative, its usually some stupid box that needs to be checked or some junk like that. keep poking around the settings?

with my x-fi titanium, i had to check a box that said "enable digital output."

I did see that in the trouble shooting section. I couldn't find it though. I suppose that's all I can do.
