Back up your files to another hard drive or a usb flash drive first or you will lose them reinstalling the operating system

Yes you will. Back them up on an external source and reinstall them after your have updated your O/s.

Honestly, its not that hard and you will have a brand spanking new & clean O/s...

I'm not sure how I did it, but when I installed windows 7 a while ago it put my windows xp user folder in a backup folder for me. I think I clicked the 'upgrade' option when installing.
