8800gts to 295gtx, small improvment? - Page 3

U get much higher scores on vantage with better cpu's.. All in all if the PSU Wasnt powering the system sufficently, you would know about it. If your going for a 800w, i would say go for a better cpu as well, for 800 would be overkillfor what u have now.

I just ran my 590 in 3Dmark06, got 31554 and it running both cores. Your score is about right considering a 295 is just a little slower than a single 580 (my 580 SLI also ran about 32k in this bench).

3dmark is always going to be CPU bound. Granted that PSU isn't doing you any favors; no promise your score will increase if you change it out, but if you plan on keeping that rig for longer than a few days I'd suggest getting something better.

Even if a Phenom II X4 doesn't bottleneck it, 3dmark will say that an i7 processor with the same GPU will get a higher score. You can always try overclocking the CPU, but I wouldn't run it another second on that PSU.

Very worried, said single rail (x2?) 12v @ 18A. = 216watts, card draws 289 TDP.
I wouldn't risk my hardware.
Yes a GTX 295 should pull much nicer scores. it is much more of a card than a 8800GTS. exactly as others have been saying, use a more recent benchmark that can utilize your hardware.

Number of rails doesn't matter in this case but yeah its a single. What does matter: 12v at 18a x2 = 36a = 432w

Considering the 295 is not underclocking it seems like its getting all the power it needs. I have no idea how hard the psu is pushing. I've played a few games for a while no issues.

I have no intentions of upgrading the cpu and psu since this is a lan pc alternative to a laptop that I built intentionally to be cheap aka play toy. Not my main rig so I don't intend on putting fancy stuff into it.

Since their recommendations consider all the power nesessary to run the entire machine based on the average consumer I'm going to bet they considered enthusests to be buying these cards and have much more power hungry components the psu has to power that I just don't have running in my lan rig.

One of many graphs out there but the card alone doesn't come close to the wattage my psu provides for just pci. If the voltage is not dropping which it isn't. Based on this chart my machine is probably still under the 80% efficiency rating on the psu even.

Make sure it's on.
Yep I checked that before I made the thread
