BF3 hitting 26 FPS on MEDIUM with a 6970?

Thread Starter
I was running a Radeon 4870 and the game was pretty much unplayable... so I just upgraded to a 6970.

Played the single player for a while and it runs very smooth on high settings... switched to MP and I'm getting 26 - 40 FPS on maps like Caspian border when looking at the majority of the map on MEDIUM settings. What's going on here? I have the newest drivers.

Here are my specs:

Windows 7 64-Bit
Sapphire Radeon 6970
Intel Core 2Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.8 GHz
4069 MB RAM (DDR2)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK P5N-E SLI w/ nVidia nForce 650 SLI chip

Any help would really be appreciated, I'm really bummed out, thought the 6970 would do the trick...

Sorry, didn't realize this was two separate issues.

Your problem is your CPU, its too old and slow. You need to overclock it as high as you possibly can (3.6-4.0GHz), or do a full platform upgrade at this point. That 6970 is just sitting there twiddling its thumbs waiting for CPU instructions by that 4 year old CPU.

Try using 11.10 preview 3. Fixed the terrible performance i was getting in the beta.

I beg to differ. His CPU is fine and fast enough for 6970. All he needs to do is overclocking it little bit. Even a modest overclock (3.3-3.6Ghz) will grant him smoother framerates.

This, for the most part. C2Qs are (afaik) clock for clock a bit slower than PHII's in most cases. 2.8 just isnt going to cut it for multiplayer, where the cpu is doing work for 32+ players at a time, physics etc. You're gonna have to overclock it a bit, but the good news is those 45nm quads overclock pretty well. You should be able to do 3.6ish, even on stock cooling

Alright, adding my system to my profile now, thanks for the tip.

Not to be annoying but I'm pretty new at all this... and I have no idea how to overclock my CPU... (Q9950)

Like, absolutely none. any tips?

I agree with the previous posters about the CPU. Maybe you could try overclocking your CPU a bit and see if you notice any improvement.

I'm running a 6950 and I'm getting around 30-40 on Ultra.

yea, BF3 loves MOAR cores and fast, too!

really, it takes an phenom ii x6 or higher-ends i7 quads from both nehalem and sandybridge to feed the GPU fast enough.
