BF3 hitting 26 FPS on MEDIUM with a 6970? - Page 2

Set FSB to 400MHz and multiplier to 8.5x and leave your voltage at stock, hello easy 3.4GHz

Well at least that's what I did. But now I know, thanks to this thread, I don't think I'll be getting BF3 if my CPU is gonna die :/

Uhm I'd actually say it's the RAM.
I've seen several benchmarks of BF3 with quads @2.0GHz performing almost as good as 4GHz.
I saw an incredible difference from 4 to 8Gb and from 1600MHz to 1808MHz.

Not really, his CPU could do just fine and grant semi-decent frames if he OC'd it up a bit.

The reason I say this is because in order to eliminate stuttering and other minor issues I had to disable HyperThreading on my 2600k, even though Battlefield 3 will utilize all my cores, it does pretty bad with all 8 running.

I could see your statement being true if he were trying to SLI two 6970's or something but honestly he will be fine if he can squeeze some "beast" out of his CPU.

Not saying your wrong, but his silicone isn't THAT bad..

It really isn't. It's comparatively ancient to what is required for BF3.

Trust me on that. A friend of mine was stuck on Low settings on ArmA 2: OA with a 4GHz overclock on a Q9550 with a GTX580, couldn't pull 50fps. My rig that I've been using for 2 years now outperformed it (constant 120+fps) until he went sandybridge, now he's pulling waaaaay better framerates.

Anyway, it's not worth upgrading just for BF3 unless you plan on playing alot of it. Need alot of faith to play that game for sure.

No, its not THAT bad, and could potentially do fairly well with a hefty overclock on it (3.6-4.0GHz).

Problem being, he's got an 8.5x multiplier stock. And a "crappy" 650i motherboard, which is KNOWN to not like quads very well. I doubt he'll even get 3.0-3.2 out of it with that board.

A new 775 board that would be competent enough to overclock his beastly chip, it'd be cheaper to sell what he's got and go for a 2500k and a ASRock Extreme3 Gen 3 with some DDR3.

Alright, I'll try overclocking to 3.4 (no idea how to, but I'll try)

If that doesn't work I guess I'll start with a new Mobo / ram (DDR3) and if that still doesn't do it, a new CPU.

You'll need to buy all 3 (motherboard, RAM, and CPU). No reason to blow money on the aging 775 platform. If you're going to upgrade to a new board and RAM, and "possibly" a CPU later on, just do it all at once.

You could resell what you've got on Craigslist or ebay or something, and easily end up with very little out of pocket once you're all done for a nice Sandy Bridge setup.

Really? Well... I mean, there's just no possible way I can afford those right now. I guess I can try selling the parts (and I do have a 4870 to sell) but I just got hit with some big bills...

sucks to pay $320 for a new video card and then have to basically buy an entirely new rig

You can always start off slowly. Get like an 1155 motherboard (one that's good and will support Ivy Bridge next year). Then buy your DDR3. Then finally grab the CPU. You could even start yourself off with like the i3 2100 for $120 instead of the 2500k for $180 to ease the purchase a little. If you bought things that would be future proof though, you could just let them sit in the closet till you had everything to build it (board, RAM, and CPU).

You'd always be able to upgrade to Ivy Bridge anyway next year.

But yeah, I know exactly how you feel. I had an Athlon II x4 last year when I got a GTX470. Had to buy my i5 setup because my CPU was holding me back too badly. I only ended up being out about $120 for the upgrade after selling my old gear though, so it wasn't TOO bad.

As said, you will not get very far over-clocking with that board and a quad core, I had that board years ago and it wasn't very good even with a dual core CPU.
