An AMD configuration

Thread Starter
Hi, dudes.

Hehe, almost everyone here gets an intel but I'll go with an AMD for my future gaming rig. I have some idea about what I want but I need some advice from you.

1. CPU Phenom II x4 965
What do you say about it in terms of performance : price as opposed to a 1) x4 975? 2) x6 1090t? These two cost about $60 more than the 965 here.

2. RAM 2x4GB 1600 Mhz kit.
G.Skill Ripjwas? corsair vengeance? Kingston HyperX?
Some people say G.Skill "doesn't get on well" with AMD CPUs. You think so?
Also, do I need CL8 RAM? I miiiiight get a bit into overclocking once again in a few years, so...?

3. MB ???
Something like GB 970A-UD3, GB 990FXA-D3 or ASUS M5A99X EVO? or ASUS M5A97 (PRO)?? I don't know anything about chipsets! Also, do all mainboards have the same-quality sound card? Because I don't plan on buying external one right now, and I have a SoundBlaster Live! 24bit 5.1 ... which isn't fully supported on Win7.

4. PSU Corsair tx? Fortron everest? Other?
How m
any watts are enough with a little breathing space for OC in a few years. The budget which I imagine here is in between $100 - 160.

5. Case CM HAF-912 PLUS

6. VGA
I already have a ASUS HD6670 1GB DDR5. I think I may stay with that one for a while waiting for the 69xx's to get cheaper.

7. HDD - Fortunately I have something to get me through since now it's not exactly the best HDD-buying time. (WD green 64mb 1024GB.)

Any advice on my questions would be appreciated!

Looks like you've already done some decent homework.

960T if you can find it for your CPU. It's a SOLID quad core that will clock insanely high and has a great IMC on it. If not, go for the 955BE, its the same as the 965 and 975.

Go for a 990FX board. Any of them should suffice fine.

PSU, a good quality 400w would be overkill for your rig as is with the 6670 in it. With a 6970, you'll need about 550w at most. Pick something from the recommended PSU list in the PSU subsection of OCN, and you'll be fine (it's stickied right at the top of the PSU section).

This and for ram I would get whatever has good specs/price. And for my rig Gskill gets along just fine with amd

Corsair is superior to any other brand right now. You'll be good with a 550W-600W PSU, and it will easily support any high end GPU too.

What?

No, just no. He'd be fine with a 300w PSU with his current config, and NO MORE than a 550w with a 6970 in there. Any PSU of quality, Corsair is FAR from being "superior to any other brand". Most of their units are good, but there's better out there, and there's plenty that are just as good (Antec, Rosewill, XFX just to name a few).

Dude, I think he meant a RAM brand, not PSU.

Well, as far as PSU's go....
http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...-supplies.html

Pick anything off that list that's 550-650w, and you'll be solid for any single card you could ever want (650w if you wanted to go like 6990 or 590). I'd just go for the cheapest option that makes that list personally.

Well, at least here it is. A 600W Corsair PSU is 20-40 euros cheaper than any other brand, and on top of that it's more efficient.

I see there are CORSAIR 650W CMPSU-650TXEU for $123
and SEASONIC SS-620GB BRONZE for $102.
Whatcha gonna say, keeping in mind that I may want to OC the CPU after a while?

About the CPU, there is a x4 960t which is about $5 cheaper than the 965. You say 960t, pioneerisloud?

I was going to recommend it, but forgot

The 960T can unlock to a 6-core, if you're lucky. They do most of the time. It will OC better on the IMC than a Deneb.

I don't see a need for a 550W+ PSU right now, unless you plan to go dual GPU configuration later. If you wan't to wait for the 69xx go cheaper, can't you just wait for AMDs new 7xxx GPUs? They should be right around Christmas.
