[WCCF]AMD’s Next Generation Radeon HD 7970 GPU’s Performance Comparable to HD 6990 - Page 23

I remember reading the 7870 will be comparable to the 6970, is that true?

At what price point do you guys think these cards will enter the market? I imagine they will replace the cards which coincide with their model number, 7870 replaces the 6870, so about ~200?

The "leaked" specs that were posted a couple months back had placed the 7870s with roughly similar specs to a 6970, at significantly less power draw.

Here's a comparison between the two:
Quote:
7870 950MHz 24SIMDs 1536ALUs 96TMUs 32ROPs 256bit GDDR5 5.8Gbps 186GB / s 2GB 120W
6970 880MHz 24SIMDs 1536ALUs 96TMUs 32ROPs 256bit GDDR5 5.5Gbps 176GB / s 2GB 250W
Same "hardware" specs, but clocked higher at less than half the power draw, apparently. I compiled the 6970 specs on my own, so there might have been something in there that I goofed on. At any rate, unless they price the 7870 to something astronomical, it's going to provide incredible performance for the buck.

Oh, here's the link to those specs btw: http://www.overclock.net/rumors-unco...ours-xdr2.html

Keep in mind, this was "leaked" in early September, so it probably doesn't give any real indication of what the 7k series will look like, considering the cards probably won't be out until January, and even then we have no idea which of the 7k series will be releasing first.

But, if these are true, that would be pretty amazing.

Can anyone semi confirm this? Are the new ATI cards coming out within a month or two? Or is it most likely Q2/Q3 2012? I ask this cause I wanna build a new system and I don't wanna feel like poop when a new card that's almost twice as fast comes out at almost the same price.

The rumors I keep hearing are Q1 for mid-range, and Q2 for top-end.

It's been always like this: the new gen's single core gpu is always as fast as last gen's dual core gpu. I don't understand why people still get impressed with this.

So yes, it's expected to be as fast as the 6990, but I'm guessing the 7970 should hit the 400€ mark, while the 7990 around 800€.

Not "always." Maybe "always" when there's a new manufacturing process involved, but the 6970 was not as fast as the 5970 for instance, nor could the GTX 580 have been twice as fast as a theoretical "GTX 490."

Major generational shifts on GPUs are usually based around a process change.

NVIDIAs 500 series and AMDs 6000 series are largely rehashes of the 400 and 5000s, respectively.

I wonder when their mobile cards are going to come out. I'm going mobile gaming for now on.

Good luck with that.

It took AMD about a year after the desktop cards to release the high end laptop 6990m's.

Precisely.

With a rehash yes, but to mature the process a lot of times they will do lower end desktop chips or even mobile chips first, which seems to be the case according to rumors. From what i've read over the past couple of months, my general cosensus was that we'd see 7xxx mobile parts before years end.

OT - AMD's graphics keep getting better and better performance per watt... A shrunk Cayman @ 1ghz stock @ 120w TDP?

I can't wait to go back to the red team
