Having trouble with a Windows reinstall

Thread Starter
OK, I have an Compaq Presario CQ60-202US, and I recently got a Virus that destroyed some important Windows stuff, so a reinstall seemed in order.

For some reason, I didn't just use the recovery partition, I reinstalled with a disc. That partition is still there, however, and I think I may need to use it somehow here soon. Anyway, on with the problems at hand with the reinstall.

The Process followed:
Installed the correct version, put in the correct product key, and it goes through. Once I finish and get to the desktop, no drivers are working. So I put them on usb stick and transferred them over. Installed video and Wireless from here (Atheros for Wireless btw) and now I am running the correct resolution and I have wireless. Here are the problems I have now though.

Updating anything through Windows I get an Error code 80072F8F. Supposed to be about the machine's time being off from the servers. So I try to update the time by syncing it to any of the servers....doesn't work. Errors on everything.

So I set the time myself, and its within a minute of what I should be running. I still get the errors on everything. Windows Update, Microsoft Security Essentials, no luck updating. Windows Activation doesn't connect either. I had to do it over the phone.

TL;DR After reinstall, Windows Update, Microsoft Security Essentials updating and Windows Activation all get Error 80072F8F. Also, using a LAN cable doesn't work, and Wireless annoyingly won't turn on automatically on startup. I have to press the physical button for it to turn on.

How do I fix all this, or should I try going into the recovery partition and using that (I have no idea what it is really, or how to use it)?

Sounds like you need a serious reformat. Here's what you should do first..

Go to http://www.dban.org/ and follow instructions. Make sure you scan for viruses when you download it and then disconnect internet. Then start banning everything for hours and it should be good to go to start fresh. looks like you have a bad virus. If you cannot activate windows i know a way around that. Sometimes it's a pain in the butt to call them so you can use the registry trick and it works everytime. Beats trying to make it work. Mind you i am using a legit copy here. I have the upgrade version and i ALWAYS do a clean install and i use the registry change to activate windows 7. Beats installing Vista and go from there to upgrade Win 7 It's all marketing scheme to get you buy the retail. They are really the same.

Back to the moot point. I suggest you reformat HARDCORE with dban and start fresh. Also maybe your internet isn't working right, maybe you need a new box also?

I am very sure the virus is gone. I've taken the HDD out of the laptop and put it in my desktop, scanning with multiple Anti-Virus programs. In fact, I only saved files that were on the desktop and Program files, then wiped the last install and started new. Like I said, only original thing on the laptop now from before is that HP restore partition.

So would it really be necessary? Is the virus really still on the laptop?

As I said in the OP, it doesn't work.

Trying to sync with time.windows.com says:
"And error ocurred while Windows was syncing with time.Windows.com. The time sample was rejected because: The peer is not synchronized, or it has been too long since the peer's last synchronization.

Syncing with time.nist.gov says:
An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.nist.gov.

Syncing with time-nw.nist.gov says:
An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time-nw.nist.gov.

Syncing with time-a.nist.gov says:
An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time-a.nist.gov.

Syncing with time-b.nist.gov says:
An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time-b.nist.gov.

BUT with my desktop, also running legit Windows (yay student discounts!) I can sync with all, no problem (except time.windows.com, but I + my friends have always had problems with that one)

Hi

Have you set your Local correctly? it won't sync unless you have it spot on.

this has happened to me. make sure all your locality setting are correct, this was my problem.
