Could use advice on X-fire power consumption

Thread Starter
Hi!

This is my first time posting here, though I've made extensive use of the various guides and discussions on this forum in the past. So first up, props to the community, I'm sure there are many invisible people like myself who benefit greatly from your collective wisdom.

My question is this; I've recently upgraded my system but retained my old graphics card (a sapphire 2gb 6970). I want to crossfire in a 6950 and unlock it, or failing that another 6970. I'm concerned about 2 things; the first is whether my power supply's up to the task, and the second is if I'll be creating a bottleneck in my CPU.

System Specs

i7 2600k 3.4Ghz (O.Ced to 4Ghz)
Asus P8Z68 Deluxe motherboard
8GB Kingston 1600hx RAM
Sapphire 2GB HD6970 (O.Cecd to 940/1425)
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU cooler
Coolermaster HAF 932 case
Corsair TX750 v2 power supply

Any advice about whether my power supply isn't up to the job, or if I'll end up with bottlenecks would be greatly appreciated.
Dr Gonzo

No CPU bottleneck whatsoever, PSU should handle the load. Welcome to OCN!
Make sure your second card is also 2Gb. That's a must

Thank you Ronin, that was very helpful. And yes, the second card will be 2GB for sure.

I'd skip on the 6950 unlocking part, since you'd have to downclock your 6970. Assuming you're lucky enough to get an unlocking 6950. Just safer/easier to get a second 6970.

You'll have plenty of PSU and CPU for just a 2 card setup.

Also Phaedrus did this for OCN: http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...l-release.html

I think the difference in performance between 6950 Unlocked + 6970 VS 2x6970 would be less than 1%, for substantional difference in price

That's true, but you lose a lot of OC headroom. And there's always the risk that it doesn't unlock =P

Do the 6950s still ship with the dual bios switch?

I dont know how far you can OC a 6970 but i got my unlocked shader 6950s to 935Mhz core and 1450Mhz mem

to OP if u can spring the extra cash you might want to pick up another 6970 just for the peace of mind that you wont burn the vram up.

your CPU will be fine and wont bottleneck, my Thuban isnt even close to bottlenecking so you'll be plenty fine. and your PSU should do it, although depends on how long you've had it since PSU do degrade over time, but im sure it'll be fine, when i got my second 6950 i went for an 850w just to be on the safe side and incase i put in custom WC loops or something.

PS: your going to love crossfire, i know i am

Side note for Noize: I have the 6970s in the womans machine running at 985/1400

I've seen a few people on OCN running 1k+ core.

Sapphire 6950 Toxic and Dirt3 still with BIOS switch. The Toxic has the most unlocking success here.
