Two monitor setup w/ 6950

Thread Starter
I have a 1080p screen that i use for gaming with my 6950, but i am an admin of some battlefield 3 servers that i want to keep an eye on while gaming.

My plan is to add a smaller 18.5 inch (1366x768) monitor so i will have two screens running off the 6950. The 1080p one for gaming and the smaller one for monitoring servers, teamspeak, etc, so i don't have to alt+tab anymore.

how would i set this up? i have no clue about how to set up more than one monitor.

Eh. You plug it in? Make it an extended desktop in Windows and make sure you have set the screen you want to game on as a primary. You can also adjust the position of the screen virtually to be correct to the actual position of the screen.

That's really about it...

How I have mine hooked up is main monitor is hooked up to my 6950 and second to the HDMI on the mobo itself. Reason I do this is two reasons: 1) it lets my GPU downclock because if you have 2 screens connected directly to the GPU, it's always on the max voltage and 2) I notice when I alt-tab that the second display will "black out" for only a very brief time rather than both hooked up to GPU it seems to take a tad longer for the screen to appear again.

But other than that yeah hook it up and go to display properties. Good luck!

Go to Catalyst control centre. You will have 2 screens to move about to see how you wanna link them. I recommend you put the 2nd screen at a top left or top right of the primary screen, so that it will be easier for you to do things like moving the scroll bars, clicking the windows bar, closing browser's etc. without constantly having your cursor snap to the other monitor which gets very irritating.

You wont understand all this just from me saying, but you will when you actually set up the monitors smile.gif

And yea, just connect the monitor to the 6950. I believe you need active adapters.

ok thanks guys, unfortunately, i don't have the luxury of a display port on my motherboard, otherwise i would connect the 2nd monitor to that port.

Other things i was wondering is will having another monitor hinder gaming performance on the main screen much? i hear BF3 can use over 1.4gb of vram. And also, is there a way that i can instantly change over to the second monitor in gaming w/out alt-tabbing? (like a hotkey or something?)

For two monitor you do not need an active adapter or native Displayport monitor.

Having second or third monitor in extended mode will not effect the primary as gaming display.

No, you have to ALT+TAB to whatever applications on the second or third monitor. Unless you are gaming in Windowed mode instead of Fullscreen, you can move the pointer to other extended displays.
