How much activating PhysX will negatively affects framerate on GTX 560?

Thread Starter
I'm gearing up for Batman: Arkham City and also the future. Right now I'm running on GT 240 DDR5 and I only have one PCI-E slot (so no SLI/CrossFireX for me).

My budget only allows for something along the lines of Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 XTREME, which goes for $170, and Manli GTX 560 (non-Ti), which cost $200. I cannot go a penny more.

I live in Indonesia, so prices a bit higher than in the US.

As a price guideline, the cheapest 6850 I can find is Sapphire's, for $177.
HD 6870 is $218.
HD 6950 1GB $272.
HD 6950 2GB is $292.
GTX 460 1GB is $180.
GTX 560Ti and 470 cost the same at $251.

From what I heard, 5850 ($170) performs on the same level as 6870 ($218) and GTX 560 ($200).

I am really interested in PhysX games, so that's why I'm even considering the 560.

My question is, how much activating PhysX in 560 will affects framerates in games such as Batman: Arkham City, Mafia II, Metro 2033, Mirror's Edge, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc. when playing in 1920x1080.

It's nice if someone can give comparison, to which card level the 560 performance will degrade when PhysX is active (for example, will I get framerates comparable to 460 1GB by activating PhysX?)

If the performance drop is serious, then I'll just go for the $30 cheaper 5850.

I can't really comment as I'm new to PhysX. Since putting a 560ti in my HTPC I have only played Alice with Phsyx at max. It had no issues playing it at 1080p. Going from a 4850 w/o physx to the 560ti I really don't recall seeing much of a difference in the environment. Could be cause I did not play it for over a month between cards though.

I"ll try to remember to install Batman AA tonight on my HTPC and I'll play around with PhysX on and off and see if I can get an idea of the difference in framerates. I have heard that Mafia II will cause a pretty large hit to performance.

Honestly though from the videos I've seen Physx on max is unrealistic. I think games look much more realistic on medium. I saw a vid for the new Batman AC and on max it looks like your in a paper factory with a tornado going through it. Really takes away from the game in my opinion.

Depends on the game and settings and such, there's no way to say 'it will decrease your FPS by X% on every game at all times' or anything of that nature. Generally speaking you're looking at between 10% and 30% perf hit by enabling physX though.

460/560 non-Ti/5850 are all around the same performance. Personally if they're all about the same price I'd get the 560 ... that way at least you have the option of physX if you want it. Maybe you have to drop some other setting a bit to accommodate the extra load, but it's pretty damn cool effect in Batman AA, and I'm guessing it's even cooler-looking in BMAC. Like I say, I'd prefer to have the option of turning it on, if it were me.

Try to find a used gtx 480 for ~200$ I know you don't live in the U.S so that might be difficult but it's definitely worth a shot and I know there are deals around that are just that.

I honestly can't see how anyone plays Alice without physx! The game is just so empty without it.

Ah, have you turned it on high? It's set to low by default. Check it out.
