[PA]Apple Invents a More Efficient OLED Hybrid Display to Save Power

A news report that broke in July stated that LG thought that OLED displays weren't suitable for smartphones and tablets. Some debated that claim and now we see that Apple does as well. In a new patent application published by the US Patent and Trademark Office this morning, we discover that Apple has found a way to make an OLED based display work better with applications such as word processing and email for corporate users while gaining a power savings of up to 30%.

This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to patent a variation of something on someone else's invention? e.g OLED tech

it would seem that way, as far as i can tell apple didnt invent the touchscreen but look how many patents they have filed for them

this may be dumb as well.
but is apply actually doing the legwork here, or paying outside sources/contractors to do the research and then taking the credit?

There's a big difference between filing a patent to use "an OLED on a touchscreen device" and inventing OLED screens. Like most apple patents, they include the term "on a touchscreen/mobile device."

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2011/0267279.html
Patent in question.

After reading they propose using essentially a transflective white sheet behind the screen to act as a white color instead of displaying white on the oled display.

Yes it is possible, and when you patent a variation of a technology, you still have to pay the patenting cost for using the technology. All this does, basically, is to prevent individuals or companies without rights to this patent to apply the same variation.

Apple has thousands of engineers; it is the work of Apple.
While it is possible to acquire patents from other contracters and nearly all companies do it from time to time, they could not take credit for something they didn't do.

That's not really relevant. I'm pretty sure the patent is what matters. I seriously doubt that apple or any sane company would outsource R&D. It just doesn't make any sense at all.

Apple has and always will conduct R&D in-house. From the early days to now, their engineers have pioneered some pretty nifty tech.
haha, ok guys...i just thought that engineering OLED screen tech was kinda outside of apples typical RD endeavors so i figured they may have hired a firm or something to design then what they wanted under the apple name...idk.
