6870 Crossfire Issues

Having a hard time Overclocking these cards, anyone have some 100% stable clocks? They're sapphire, one is reference and one is non reference design.
Thanks

what program are you using to overclock?

having unmatched cards could be part of the problem. You will also likely want to disable ULPS as that can often cause issues when trying to overclock crossfire setups

figure out your max core and max memory individually. You can use a stress test program like GPU Tool just be sure to enable full screen. Once you find your max #, try to find a happy medium for the two. Also, don't be surprise if your stable in a stability test program but unstable in a demanding game. Gaming is the only true Stress Test utility. And remember, no card, cpu, memory will overclock the same. Just gota trial and error. Try to keep temps under 80c under full load even though GPU's can handle more.

I use MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 beta 8 (google it)

I had my 6870 at 980/1150 at stock voltage, so give that a try.

I couldn't get 970/1150 to work so im just back at stock clock for the time being. But I'm a little concerned considering my temps are hitting over 80c. Should I worry about the temps? Not much i can really do considering it's at stock clock.

All dual cards run hot. The previous suggestion is a good one, test them invidually.

My opinion would be just test the reference card as it's most likely your limiting factor. Go as high as you can get it 'stable' and then apply it to both cards.

Also if the reference is a shrouded card put that on the bottom. The hot air exhaust will be blown out the back of the tower instead of being dumped over the top of your top card. Also the reference being the bottom card can breath fresh air into the fan.

The non-reference card being a better cooling card will stay a bit cooler rather than the other way around scenario. The hot air off the non-reference card will dump into your case the heat should rise. At least not sucked into the other cards casing.

I also hope you set your fan to manual settings. The auto settings that come stock with the cards all suck eggs. Set an aggressive fan profile to further help your higher temps.

Try that and let us know if that worked. I had two MSI AMD 6870's for a bit. Top cards always run hotter.

Thanks for the help there. My top card, since it's not the reference, runs cooler. And the reference is on the bottom. I will try and oc it little by little and see what happens. I can almost guarantee it's the reference card holding me back.

I'm still crashing (bsod) on stock clocks. Nonreference card never exceeds 75c and the Reference card never exceeds 86c. Any ideas?

First let me ask if your still at regular voltage? What is your stock voltage?

Have you tried to bump your current stock voltage?

First try about 0.025v? See if that does anything.

I'd bump it an additional 0.025v if not for total of 0.050v.

It might restabalize the cards. Cards come with different stock voltages even from same series. Sometimes it's a bit low even at stock with stock clocks.

If it stabalizes it and then the problem crops up again, you may have one of your two cards going bad.

Only way to know if one of your cards is going, is to try them both one at a time. Give it a few days, heavy gaming, normal usage, etc. Then try the other. You'll know by then if it's one of the cards.

If it happens to both then it will be something different and not your GPU's. Good luck, post back and let us know what your results were.

I fixed the freezing and bsod-ing issues. For some reason my hyper threading was off. So i turned it back on and i no longer have any issues.
thanks for all the help.
Now i need to get a stable overclock figured out.
