i7 or i5 ready for ocing

Hey guys, I'm a commentator on youtube for battlefield 3 (www.youtube.com/devsain) so I do allot of gaming and video editing. Now I also record when I game and I'm sure as most of you may know when recording it puts some strain on the processor/video card resulting in a bit less FPS.

Originally I was deciding on this set up:

Intel Core i5-2500K
MSI N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB)
ASUS P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0)
CORSAIR H100

But as luck would have it I'm looking at getting a free EVGA GTX 570, so here is a build i'm thinking of doing now.

Intel Core i7-2600K
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB)
ASUS P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0)
CORSAIR H100

I've heard rumors that say the i5 bottlenecks the 570 and that i would need an i7. but i'm not sure if this is true. So question is do I stick with the same build and pop in the new video card? Or do I go ahead and get the i7-2600K? Also how far do you think I can OC the i7 compared to the i5? Andd if you guys know of a better motherboard for the i7 let me know

HT is problem in Battlefield 3.. I hate idiots saying that HT decrease performance in games, when its only on BATTLEFIELD 3

I keep hearing about problems with HT and Battlefield 3. Is it really that big of deal? I was going to start playing it soon, but that's annoying if I would have to disable HT to play it...

2600k for sure if you do video work. I've never noticed any kind of "stutter" in BF3 and I've play A LOT since BF3 came out, might be isolated incidents.

How high do you think i can oc the i7 compared to the i5? I've heard i can go up to 4.7 with the i5 but i don't know if i7 is able to do more. Both will be cooled with H100

Well from what i've seen the i5-2500k does seem to have an edge on overclocking potential. Although it is luck of the draw when it comes to getting a golden chip.

I would recommend an i5-2500k also.

Regards to bottlenecking, not at all with a single GPU.

i7 does create more heat with HT on so this can affect your overclock potential. You should be fine with the H100 though, I was able to get to 4.7 GHz with an H70 on mine, but I still have some more tweaking to do.

hmm, so out of everything is it really worth the extra $100 for the i7? I'm thinking of possibly sticking to the i5 and overclock it high to get the real benefit from it
post #9 of 10
I'd recommend the i5. And for the bottlenecking issue, impossible as you can see in my system specs. The $100 can go somewhere else.

If you use a lot of multi-threaded programs, yes get the 2600k. If not, 2500k
