GTX 580 BF3 issues

Thread Starter
So i have a new zotac GTX 580 AMP 2 card (3gigs) in my machine, mainly to play BF3. I have the BF3 settings all maxxed out. I was getting frequent crashes and some artifacting. First thing i tried was unstalling drivers and using driver sweeper in safe mode and then installing the newest ones. that didnt fix it and after more reading i though maybe it was a voltage issue. According to CPUID HW monitor it was getting between .96V and 1.04V. I got MSI afterburner and cranked the volts up slowly. It seems to be a bit more stable at 1.075 volts but I still get some serious artifacting and crash once in a while ( a lot less frequent than before though). I have also seen random textures on a wall flashing in the distance and graphical bugs like that. Zotac support tells me there will be a bootable image availible soon to fix my issues.

my questions :
- is this possibly BF3s software?
- is the fact i turned the voltage up and it helped but didnt fix it a sign that i should RMA?
- How can i test to see if my graphics card's memory is good?
- Is it possible that the bootable image will actualy fix all these issues?

any other info/advice is much apreshiated!

Just get a 6970 you need more VRAM which 580 don't have I know 580 is faster but I don't know if you played bf2 with 580 when you run across the bi maps you can see texture and draw distance keep piping up with 6970 you dont have that problem because it has more ram

I am pretty much stuck with this card. I belive my only option is RMA, i can't get a refund. Also it has 3 gigs of ram and the most ive ever seen it use is like 1777. not sure why u think vram is a problem.

In the future, please do not come onto the nVidia boards and tell people who already own new nV cards to 'just get an (fill in AMD card here) instead!'. The OP did not ask about AMD cards, nor did he ever suggest that returning his new card was an option. Thank you thumb.gif

I gave your questions #'s above smile.gif

1) Yes, it's a brand-new game. Some of what you describe absolutely could be the games 'fault' (or the driver's interaction w/the game code).
2) Perhaps, yes. Is this an OC'd card, I take it? Sometimes on OC'd cards they mess up and don't set the voltage high enough on 'em at the factory, and you can overcome this either using an OC app or modding the bios. The question is, are you okay w/these options?
3) If your memory wasn't 'good' you'd have a lot worse problems than random graphical bugs in one game. See #1 above ... glitches are most likely the game, not the hardware.
4) Yes, assuming this 'bootable image' is correcting issues with the card's BIOS (which is what I'd imagine it would be doing).

wow, excellent! Thank you for the quick and helpful responce.

My card is factory OCed to 815, here is a link to what i bought:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500201

I am ok with having to turn my voltage up myself if it will save me from having to RMA the card. I just hope the only thing wrong is the voltage levels. 1.075 seems like it is getting kinda high to me but i am new to this. My temps ushaly max out at 64, one long sesion where my room was quite warm it went up to 68 but that is the absolute max i have seen it run at.
Also I play on 1440 x 900 res (low i know, its what my 21 inch recomends)

i have a 650w PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153131

New questions:
- is my PSU good enough for this card?
- should i keep turning up the voltage? how do i make sure i dont damage the card?
- should i use the force constant voltage option?
- any way to insure the voltage is the only problem with the card?
- wanted to OC this card a little more but if i cant get it stable on factory settings that is a bad idea correct?

sorry for all the noob questions and thanks again!

I have GTX580 in SLI stock speeds. I had no end of troubles with stability, hard locks etc until i upped the core voltage to 1.1V. Since then over 20 hours of play at Ultra+ settings without a single issue. I watercool my cards so temps never exceed 60oC, so that is an issue you need to be careful.

What PSU do you have?
What temp are your cards reaching after 10 minutes of play?

This to me looks increasingly like a power (lack of) or heat issue.

drop your gpu freq back to 772 Mhz and then up your vcore.

it solved my crashing issue 100%

tried to flash my BIOS using nvflash 5.100.0.1 today and got the error:

this program can only be run in dos mode

????
I'm using a USB stick formatted as an MS-DOS boot disk using the HP utility and the files are the ones I copied from the link in the guide by 88gamer88. Anyone know of a solution.

My old zotac card had some problems as well, it seems not wanting to sli with 2 of the same brand card. The whole screen will turn green if i open a game.... their support till today havent gotten back to me.

So i sold them off and got some other brand, currently on evga and leadtek and no problem at all.
