First OC Failed

Thread Starter
so here's my first OC, only increase BLCK by 10 from 133 to 143 with a x22 multiplier

Vcore was 1.12

VTT 1.0

DRAM 1.5 (my mem is rated 1600 DDR3 1.65v, should I increase to that?)

PLL 1.8

PCH 1.05

and power saving options were disabled

I was OC from 2.9 to 3.1 and wasn't able to boot up into BIOS so I had to reset my CMOS, worked fine and I'm at default settings now but can anyone give me a voltage to start out with or are my current voltages not right for going to 3.1?

I'd definately set your DRAM to 1.65 if that's what those chips are rated at.

Try upping the vcore more? That does seem a little bit low. Maybe start off with 1.3v than work your way down or up depending on the overclock you want to settle with.
PLL and PCH seems fine right now.

yeah good idea, I figured I would work up but thats just gona be annoying so I set my vcore to 1.3, vtt 1.5, dram 1.65, pll 1.8, pch 1.05 and it seems stable at 3.1GHz... gona do some more testing then I'll just keep going up to where I want and then drop the vcore a notch or two, boot up and test to see how low I can get it.

at least I think thats what I should do

That sounds about right. Make sure to monitor your temps the whole time.
Once you think you have reached somewhat of a stable overclock, be sure to stress the system with intel burn test 5-8 passes, then prime95 for at least 16 hours or so.

Make sure you have windows restart on bsod disabled.
I normally refer to http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...code-list.html for guidelines on testing my overclock. Although this guide is for 1366 chipsets, this should still at least help you trouble shoot some issues with your bsod if you do get any.

hmm ok, I'm not finished yet but does this seem right to you

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2081001

my bus speed and qpi link haven't really increased at all, just my clock speed and I don't really see a performance increase in boot up time with 3.6GHz... am I doing something wrong?

edit: oh yeah and also when I boot into my bios it says I'm at 3.64GHz but when I look at CPU-Z it says 3800MHz

What are you using to test performances? As for boot up time, that is almost entirely dependent on your hard drive speed. Even the fastest processor will have a terrible boot up time with slow mechanical hard drives.

Your cpuz link shows that it's at 3.6ghz. You might be seeing turbo mode kick in during stressing, raising the multiplier to 23x.

So 164.44 x 23 = 3.78ghz. Does that sound right?

How are temps so far? You might be able to reach a higher overclock by setting bus speed at 191, 21x multiplier and vcore at 1.35v - 1.40v.

I'm using Intel Burn Test and Prime95, as for boot up I guess I though it was dependent on CPU

something is happening with my multiplier though, when I boot into the bios and look in CPU config it tells me the values are x9 - x21 however it still has the option for x22 but it is only showing x21 in the bios e.g. BLCK 173 x22 multiplier shows 3.6GHz in bios and 3800MHz in CPU-Z so which one should I trust?

as for my temps they are around 65-70

The bios must not be showing it with the turbo multiplier. I assume you are overclocking your sig rig right? If so, the i7 860 highest multiplier before turbo is 21x. If you had left turbo mode on, you could technically have it locked on a higher multiplier(kind of what you did there) and turbo mode just gives you one more multiplier.

These where my settings with hyper threading on for 4.0GHz. Also I only two memory slots full at 4gb each, I see you got all four slots full and that might require a bit more voltage just not sure where.

My settings for my 870 with ht on.
Vcore 1.30
Cpu vtt 1.35
Stable with 20 runs of Linx X
Prime 95 24hours
And Intell burn But I cant remember how many passes.
My temps are 27 Idle and 70 full load.\\Hope this help you get started.
Also make sure your memory is stable.
My frequencies are cpu 4.0ghz and my memory was left at 1600.

ah ok so then how do I know turbo is on? I only get the option to turn it off/on when I have the OC setting to auto, does it automatically kick in when I boot up windows?

also what is the advantage of having a 191 x21 compared to a 183 x22?

@Haze80
idle 27, do you have speedstep enabled and the other power savers?
