How would RAID 0 and RAID 1 work on this setup?

Thread Starter 
I have two 1TB 7200RPM HDDs; one is 6Gbps with a 64MB cache, and the other is 3Gbps with a 32MB cache. Also, I have Win7 Home Premium, so I assume I would have to use the BIOS to set up RAID 0 (or at least from what I've read).

I figure that RAID 0 would be pointless with this set up, since it would be limited by the slower drive. Would RAID 1 be similarly limited, or would I see normal write speeds and faster read speeds like a normal RAID 1 array?

the RAID0 will likely perform identically to the performance you'd get if you used identical disks - chances are your drives are very similar in performance, as cache and SATA rev are irrelevant here.

Likewise with RAID1 - except you don't get the performance you seem to expect. RAID1 gives (on average) slightly slower write speeds (you have to wait for 2 drives to complete each write operation, which takes longer than waiting for 1 drive). Reads often have very slightly lower access times, but sequential reads are not increased in speed when using RAID1 with mechanical drives (unlike RAID1 using SSDs on some controllers (including the ICH10R) - which can give RAID0-like read speeds when in RAID1).

I assume you mean that cache and SATA rev are irrelevant to RAID? And are you saying I'd see performance identical to what I'd see with two 3Gbps drives?

Also of note, the faster drive is a brand new WD Caviar Black, while the slower one is an older model Hitachi Deskstar.

I guess my real question is, what would be the difference in performance from my current set up, i.e. booting and running programs/games from the faster WD drive, and using the Hitachi as a storage drive?

RAID arrays are always limited by the slower disk.

the_beast was indicating that for real world performance the difference between those drives is negligible. You really don't gain anything by having a mechanical drive on SATA 6 Gbps.

And pretty much identical to what you'd see running 2 6Gb/s drives. The performance difference is minimal.

Depending on exactly which drives they are there could be some difference, but still it's likely to be effectively non-existent in real-world use.

probably not - RAID0 can help some operations somewhat, but does little for others. It really depends what you use your rig for. Nothing will improve stuff in the same way that a 30-60GB SSD to run your OS would though...

OK, thanks for the help, I'll probably stick to the set up I've got for now, since I don't really have the cash to blow on a SSD.

Before doing any RAID (0 or 1) you should test both drives with HDTune. Run the benchmark on both and take a screenshot. If they're close, RAID should work fine. If they have hugely different sequential speeds or access times, it may not work nearly as well.
