AMD Phenom II X4 965 FSB OC/Ram tweaking?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for some suggestions on overclocking mostly through my FSB if possible, at the moment I'm running my FSB at 212 with a multiplier of 19 for 4ghz @ 1.4 Vcore. It's stable and has gone through prime95 and intel burn test for over 12 hours.

My ram is dual channel, but cpu-z and Aida64 read it as single since I have gone through my FSB a little, also the ratio is 1:2. I have read that 1:2 is fine and I have also read it isn't. I also know nothing about tweaking ram timings at all and I'm hoping someone can explain or help with tweaking them properly.

You can't tell me that out of 120+ views on OVERCLOCK.net that not a single viewer knows about ram timings.

Come on guys, don't be useless like me!

1st of all change ram location. Put the ram to the right location to get dual channel. 2nd your TRC isn't right it's too high 24. Try this one 5-5-5-15-20-1T with 1.9v/2v (because it's DDR2 it can handle 2.2v without any problem).

Your ram isn't placed correctly that's why he is single channel. Not because of 1:2 ratio.

You should definitely put the RAM in the correct slots for the dual channel benefit.

FSB ratio is irrelevant on modern AMD platforms because of the integrated memory controller design. Don't bother with a harder ref clock OC if you can multiplier OC. You won't lose any performance even if you're running a 100:55 ratio or something as opposed to 1:2.

Not that I recommend you do OC on this motherboard as it uses a particularly low end 4+1-phase VRM design known for problems after long-term usage with high-wattage overclocked chips...

Thanks, I swore I put them in the correct slots, guess not after looking, I feel kind of stupid now hah. Ill try the ram timings, I am already running my ram at 1.9v my ram has always given me trouble at 1.8v even without a OC.

I don't plan on going past 1.4vcore and 2.0v for my ram. Do you think I should be save even with the low end 4+1 phase?

On another note should I kind of skipping the basic Ocing guideline for seeing what my max FSB is same with my Max multiplier at 1.4v (I would really like to not pass 1.4Vcore if possible) so I might drop my current OC even though its stable and see what I come up with and go from there. Does anyone have suggestions on if i should go for more of a FSB overclock if it is possible over just a multiplier raise, I know FSB gives better performance but I'm mostly wondering from other peoples experience with this chip.

If you want to stay safe. Just put old AMD Stock fan like me as VRM cooler ^^.

Do you have any pictures of how you managed to do that?

Also I couldn't do 1T but i was able to change it to 5 5 5 15 20 2t

I haven't any picture right now. But i will send them soon as i can. I can explain how to put them to VRMs. Remove heatsink from Stock Fan, Remove the plastic cover (or brake it) just get the fan put it as 2nd CPU fan or Chassis fan get 2 pieces of wire with 3~4 inches lenght bind them to the back of the case and rotate the fan to the VRM's and you are done. With this cooling they will never overheat and that means you can hit 4.2/4.3GHz maximum (4.5GHz with golden chips).

Sounds interesting, I have the Lanboy air so I might just be able to slap another fan on the side panel and hit it, I'm hoping I have a golden chip, Heat was my biggest issues and air cooling wasn't cutting it, 3 different cases with lots of different fan variations and could never get any decent temps until I bought my H100 and it cools like a Champ. I went from about 38-45c idle 50-55 load to 28-32 idle to 44c max load with prime95/intelburn test.

With my worse cooler when i overclock my cpu to 3.7/3.8 i only hit 54'C (and my max temps is 71'C that means nothing to worry for me and it's too bad for me because my c2 revision max oc is 3.8GHz i can't go over 3.8GHz, c3's can do 4GHz and 4.2GHz with 58~63'C but 95W cpus are in safe with this temps).
