Astro A40 Mixamp - Surround sound?

Thread Starter
I am trying to get a great surround headphone experience. I have heard great things about this mixamp. Does this thing provide me with surround audio regardless of what headphones you use with it?

Currently I've got Sennheiser HD 280s hooked into Xonar DG using DD 7.1 emulation. It's good, but it's not great. The sound quality is top notch but I can't say that I can actually pinpoint the sounds. I had the same issue with the G35s, just with less quality sound.

Yes and no. What the MixAmp does is it attempts to simulate surround in headphones with two drivers (Its also essentially virtual surround). This should theoretically work for ALL Stereo headsets. Where the problem lies, is that it also depends on your headset being able to transmit that level of detail.
The 280s are great headphones, but what they are hooked up to need to be able to power them. I'm not sure if the mixamp can power it as well as the Xonar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.
Personally, it seems to me the praise of the MixAmp lies with it being paired with the A40. I don't think it will beat out a good set of sennheisser's and a good sound card, like you have). Just my guess tho.

Edit: P.S. Another part of the reason the MixAmp gets so much praise is often because many people who use it also use it with XBox and PS3, which do not have native support for full blown surround unless run through a receiver.
