Looking for advice

Alright so the holidays are here and its time to get me some good audio stuff. Im looking at getting the shenhiser hd598. but i am lost as to what sound card to power them with. i see things like the titanium HD and asus xonar and then ht omega.

What i am doing with my sound is 60% gaming 40% movies and music. I donot ever use speakers only headphones. my budget for the sound card is about 200$ as well as the speakers. So if there is another brand in the price range thats better suggestions on that would be great as well.

Xonar isn't very good as far as audio quality goes in the gaming department, so I'd recommend X-Fi if your primary focus is gaming. However, for music and other in general, I'd recommend a Xonar.

every day you have a different avatar epeen =p. Alright what about headphones? would a pc360 hd558 be a better choice. Just want to make sure i can get the most out of a headphone/set with the sound card as well.

Haha, note the usertitle

Being completely honest, audio is my weakest department, especially peripherals, so I unfortunately cannot give you a very good recommendation for headphones. However, I'm sure someone will pop in and give you a good one.

So are you getting the 558 or 598? Are you planning to recable them? (does make it sound better).

If you do, I would say the 598s are superior to the 360. 558s recabled would be too.

Both headphones are easy to drive. The amp section on the Xonar ST/X won't be that important. That said, I would recommend you save some money and just buy the Titanium HD or skip that and go directly to an external DAC with built in amp.

The Titanium HD will be better in games, but going external DAC will make music and movies and sound in general sound crisper, clearer and better. Lots to recommend under 200.

Audinst MX-1 comes to mind.

How is a external DAC better over a sound card? and would i still need a good soundcard to send signal to the DAC?

depends on your total budget for everything including headphones because base don your preferences, there could be better options.

about 400$ less is better but more can be arranged

Yeah, I mean for the price of NEW 598s, you could get better performance for the price.

No, the external DAC plugs in via USB don't need a sound card.
