Why does the AMD FX have poor linpack results?

What part of the processor was changed to give the new buldozer chips such a poor linpack / Intel Burn Test result?

We use it a lot at work just for fun and with friends, my AMD 965BE @ STOCK 3.4GHz manages to get about 28GFlops and OVERCLOCKED @ 4.2GHz it manages over 40 by a little. Keep in mind if this seems low it is due to DDR2 ram and 32bit windows 7. I run it on my i7 820QM HP Envy and get a hair over 25GFlops @ 1.73 GHz WITH 64bit windows 7. My friends Phenom 9950 gets over 30GFlops with 64bit windows....

My new FX-4100 system with DDR3 ram overclocked or stock with Biostar TA990FXE board and MSI HD 6770 running on a 160gb Intel 320 series SSD can't even hit 18GFlops.

My question isn't so much why is this chip pathetic because it is blazing fast. It seems to be faster than the Phenom II for games and encoding movies. My question is what causes this in the CPU architecture? What exactly does linpack test? How can a new generation be nothing compared to the last?

It's slower than Phenom II in almost every single way. 20% slower clock for clock on average, and horrible in games.

Those are really, really bad scores. If you had 64bit and DDR3 you'd be getting like 54+.

FPU performance. Bulldozer has 1 256 bit FPU per module, which can split into two 128 bit FPUs while doing something that doesn't support AVX. LinX doesn't support AVX, so it's 4 128 bits against the Phenoms 4 128 bits. The Phenom II wins because it's faster clock for clock.

Linkpak is written in fortran and built with a intel compiler that disables smid instructions on AMD platform cpu's sse,sse2,sse3 etc . Linpak sucks on amd processors period.

Try Y cruncher, its neutral.run it on both intel and amd cpu's. Intel still comes out with a win, but the slant is not so ridiculous as the linpack test which imho are a joke.

Another biased bench complaint when the user is comparing AMD with AMD...

a)you're using 32-bit windows7
b)you're using 32-bit window7 w/o service pack1(which has support for AVX)

linpack makes use of the avx instruction set..and..that cpu DOES process it..

so...those 2 factors aren't helping the scores..andd..that chip..she is weeempy

Its a useless benchmark on a amd cpu. We already know AMD dropped some x87 performance of bd, its not a secret. Repeat NOT A SECRET

Ycruncher will give a different result. Core for core phenomII beats bd, thuban just barely gets edged out by bd multithreaded.

try learning.

Well I have Windows 7 w/ Service Pack 1 installed on all of my computers.

On my work computer PII 965BE it is 32bit Windows 7 Professional w/ SP 1. My AMD FX system and Core i7 HP Envy laptop are both using 64bit W7 Ultimate w/ SP1.

I know the processor is week, I built this whole system I am using for about $300 (between Amazon gift certificates and parts I had from another system). I am holding out for Ivy Bridge before I drop a couple stacks on a new PC.

It just makes no sense (none that I want to believe at least) that these chips are having trouble against the previous generation. It would be like a Pentium 2 beating a P3 or a P3 beating a P4....

P3 was actually faster than P4 clock for clock tongue.gif.
