Work PC for my dad

Thread Starter
Hey guys me father needs a new pc for his work. He uses a lot of excel and internet (VPN and Email ect.) So he needs ram and FAST internet. We have pretty good internet already so I just don't want to bottle neck it. I don't want him to have a overpriced dell but I don't know what to get for work pc's. I was hopping this could be a intel system.

Thanks guys !

For that, all you really need is a dual core CPU, 1-2gb of ram and onboard video.

Any modern computer (Socket 775 or over, if you ask me) won't "bottleneck" fast internet. If he's looking for a workhorse machine that'll handle his office-ish tasks, have him get a small PC like a little eMachines, Dell, or HP from Microcenter. At work we got a mid-range LGA775 eMachines for under $200 .

What's his budget? For an office PC there are a ton of options. My first choice would be a lowish-end Sandy Bridge CPU (i3-2100, maybe), but there's also the Athlon II and Phenom II lines to consider from AMD, or even AMD's APU chips.

His budget is ridiculous (like up to 3000$) (iknow right?) So i'm thinking a 2100 and some low to mid range gfx card (It just doesn't feel right to not have one Any mobo should be good right?

A decent z68 mobo gigabyte UD5 maybe
8GB 1600Mhz ram
2TB Green or eco HDD
Bluray/DVD writer
700w corsair PSU

would be good for 5-6 years easy.

Way to be overkill...

I'd personally get a i3-2100 with a H67 motherboard for quick sync and a discret GPU like a HD 6570 or something similar. Than add some RAM, a nice case and a roughly 400W PSU and it will be perfect.

You can also tell him it costs 1500$ so that will make him happy if he wants to pay 3000$. Than, you keep the rest of the money

I'd reconsider the 2tb, and the PSU, unless he stores a tons of movies or data content.

Get an SSD for a good work computer

and DANG, 2600 is a bit overkill, not enough to justify price imo, even for 5-6s, a good dual should last 3-4, and for its price you could get a more energy efficient and higher IPC model, rather than a mutlitasking one, where MS word and Interwebs don't really take up that much performance for the average working man.

Good suggestions, a bit overkill, but that is just my opinion.

i3 2100
H61 Mobo
4 GB DDR3 1600 Ram
400-500W PSU
Crucial M4 128 GB SSD
1 TB Storage HDD
Case of your choice

This should NOT break 1000, and he needs nothing more. Onboard video will be great. This obviously does not cover keyboard, mouse, or monitor

I like this (lol I know I'm not OP). Vote for this build, but with 8GB of ram, and even less of a psu
like an antec earthwatts 380D or neo eco 400, or even less from a reputable manu.

Using Phaedrus's psu calc, You'd need a grand total of 200w as I put it in, so ehhhh a Seasonic SS 300w works too.
