For musical presentation I suggest skipping the sub and picking mains that will deliver your desired bass extension. You'll get a better system for your money this way. The problem with powered subwoofers on a budget is that you are buying an uneccessary 3rd amplifier- usually to power a relatively small driver that is loaded in a small little cube, resulting in lousy efficiency and only enough budget left for some satellites and a half-crummy amp. If you take that $500 budget, and divy it up 2 ways rather than 3, you will get a better sounding amp, and bigger more efficient floor standing speakers that will actually be more enjoyable to listen to.

What sort of places can you order/buy from? Can you order from US based companies or better to stay in Canada?

Is building speakers an option? (do you have wood working skills/tools?)
