i7 2600k Rendering Times?

post #1 of 75

Hey all,

Just today I upgraded my i5 2500k, to an i7 2600k, with the intent to see an increase in video rendering times. After install, I've seen not-so-great temperatures, and not-so-great rendering times.

A 20 minute video, rendering at 1080p, 1920x1080 resolution, 20,000,000 bit rate, 30FPS, is taking roughly under an hour to render.

The CPU is running at stock speeds, with the stock fan. (Because my damn Zalman CNPS5X after-market fan didn't match my P8P67 motherboard; the heat sinks got in the way)

My question here is this: Does that sound like the correct rendering time for that setup? My i5 did the exact same thing in about the same amount of time; I had expected to see a significant improvement in rendering times between the two. But so far, I have yet to see any real improvement.

For what it's worth, I intend to overclock the i7, but this stock fan is terrible right now. I did overclock my i5 slightly, so perhaps that has something to do with. I'm not sure why, but my i5's stock fan was much better than the i7's stock fan.

Your thoughts?

What program are you using to render it? Does this program support hyperthreading?

Sorry, forgot to mention that. I'm using Sony Vegas Pro 10. To my knowledge, it supports hyperthreading.

Can you check your computer's actually speed with CPU-Z?

i dont think vegas 10 supports HT so could be a reason why?
also the 2600k will always be hotter the a 2500k cause of the HT

Yes it does.

What codec is the final rendered video in? Some of them are not as multi core friendly as the others.

I'll try to answer everyone's questions in this post:

@Nick2253
Here is a screenshot that has all of my CPU-Z readings.
http://www.clevernoob.com/images/mycompy.png

@PB4UGO
My original footage is in .avi format; straight video from Full-Screen Fraps, on max FPS settings.
These are extremely high-sized files because they haven't been encoded, and the average recording session takes up about 80-100GB of space. (Roughly 25-35 minutes of time)
I also record consoles using the Hauppauge HD PVR, however I have yet to make any console game walkthroughs, so I do not know what video format the Hauppauge records in.

My final rendered videos are in .mp4 format, and take up about as much space as a single raw Fraps clip. (about 2-3GB)

@aldfig0
Here's a screenshot of my typical video rendering settings in Vegas.

@IXcrispyXI
The fact that the i7 typically produces slightly more heat makes a lot of sense to me; because even in idle, it is typically about 5C hotter than my i5 was. That helps put my mind at ease at least somewhat.

as far as what i see in the screen shot....

Looks like you're using SonyAVC...good choice as it's faster and causes less stress(heat) than MainConcept...and just as good quality. Also, change "Profile" to High for better quality, but not until you read the rest of this post.

...next, at the bottom, Change "Encode Mode" to CPU only. That's the biggest change, because you're basing this thread CPU render time, and the Automatic setting will split the duties between your CPU and GPU. It's the best way to isolate the issue.

try that first and see what you get.
