Which cpu should i get?

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
Ok so in the near future near thanksgiving to new years i plan on building a new rig. And ive been looking at whether to go with Amd or intel. My price range needs to be <$400 and im not worried about heat/power usage (i plan on water cooling). There is a couple processors ive been looking at 1. Amd fx 8150 2. intel 2600k 3. intel 2500k 4. amd 1100T but also i see alot of people looking for the ivy cpus coming out soon. So ive been hearing mixed things about everything people say the 2500k/2600k is awesome for gaming but only has 4 cores compared to the 8 the fx has and the 6 the 1100T has, and i may be wrong but its seems like the fx series can get to a higher OC range without some crazy cooling. So what i plan on using my computer for: Im a persons with many hobbies so i have many diffrent things on my computer not just games (video editing, audio editing /recording, photoshop, huge music library (100gb and counting)) I also like to try and commentate for games. Also i plan on only getting 1 gpu for now but getting another for sli/crossfire later and also id like 16gb of ram at 1800+. the biggest factor for me is i am a huge MC fan and so are my friends but they dont have any good pcs (crappy labtops) so i run a server tht holds about 10 people at max at time but now the mc is getting updated it lags like crazy with a server and a client running(i tried doing fraps aswell and i got fps at like 13) at the same time which made me think the fx is the way to go since there is more cores but the from what i hear the fx isnt ever fully used not until the future which could be good cause i dont wanna have to put in 400 dollars in 2 years for a new mobo/cpu. Also benchmarks arent huge to me but i do plan on OCing past 4.3ghz.

Sorry for any facts or info i messed up on. Thanks for reading and all opinions accepted except amd/intel fanboys idc about name i care about performance.

i'm guessing your $400 budget is a typo.

either way i'd go with a 2600k. even though bulldoze has more cores, they're not properly optimized and the CPU is a slouch in general. in some benchmarks the phenom 6-core actually outperforms it.

so a 2600k is probably your best bet, it also has hyperthreading unlike the 2500k which is good for content editing/creation.

First guy is right. Stick with the 2500k. Ivy bridge has several months to go and sandy bridge e is a high priced chip, we think.

2500k..:thinking.gif: it's comparable to....windows XP ..THAT good
2500k=$214
my mobo=$124 @ the egg (personally..i'm not a fan of the big, blocky vrm sinks, though) and the gpu slot placement..sli/crossfire? eh..i'd look at something else if i wanted to do that...(it would work with cards that only take up 2 slots better)i.e. reference cooler

2500k definitely. 4 cores is enough to work with in your case.

Hi oc,

I have an 110T and I have a 2600K. The K is mcuh faster. The T ran 20,000 on #dMArk06 withthe same HDD, GPU and MEM as the K and the K hits consistant 26,000.
That is a significant difference. Also both MOBO's are the good stuff the AMD board is the Gigabyte GA MA 790XT UD4P and the Intel is the Asus P8Z68-V-Peo Gen3. Either setup is a capable machine but the as far as I am concerned based on the two systems, K in 2600K stands for king. You will have similar experiences with the 2500K. It just doesn;t have the multithread feature.
In any case good luck.

Oh Yeah the Asus and K ran about $500 but you would $80 off that with the I5 instead of the I7.

"video editing, audio editing /recording, photoshop"

Get the 2600k cause it has hyperthreading which will help with editing.
