A way to easily switch from desk to couch gaming?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to set up my pc in a way that if I want to play on the couch on the 42in with a remote I can. And if I want to play at my desk I should be able to easily switch back.

The pc and desk is about 20 feet from the tv. I'd use a ps3 Bluetooth remote set up with a BT dongle. So I need a way to be able to switch the screens easily. Any types of switches for this function?

Any ideas?

a question first, so you want to be able to switch between the monitor and TV wirelessly?
I'm not sure but I this that's impossible.

maybe if you can get a 20ft long VGA or DVI, you can switch screens manually on your pc,
that seems to be the only way I think of.

I do know that there is a wireless video card called KFA2 GTX460, maybe that's what you're thinking of?

EDIT: okay I was wrong, there is apparently devices that you can use to connect to your TV, it's called the warpia Wireless USB PC to TV Audio & Video Display Adapter Set. there is a lot of other stuff just like that, just type PC to TV wireless into google.

gotta love google

Nono I don't mean wirelessly. I would have it wired but I don't want to have to go in the back of my pc every time I want to switch sources. So just a switch between monitor and tv.

oh I see, I think I have the same set up you said, do you have a VGA, DVI, or HDMI port on the back of your TV? just connect the TV as an another display and duplicate the screens and when you get to the TV just switch the TV as the main display and when you turn off the TV, your pc switches back to the monitors. you just need your TV remote and the ability to receive PC signals.

hope that made sense.

Well you just need to have a DVi,VGA or even an HDMI cable from your computer to your TV, and within your OS make it so that it duplicates image.

All you would really need to do is switch the TV/monitor on/off thumb.gif

My gtx580 should have 2 outputs right?, do you think a 580 can output to a 42 1080p ok? I mean how will games run on that size screen? And do you reccomend dvi or hdmi

Also if the screens are duplicated will this use up more gpu resources? Or no not as long as one of the screen is off.

yes that should work, but the HDMI picture from the PC to the TV is weird compared to say DVI or VGA(I did this whole experiment on it) and you will need to rely on speakers connected to the PC to hear anything.

problem solved?

HDMI should carry sound no problem. You would just have to change your primary playback device from your speakers to your TV when you moved. 1080p shouldn't be a problem for a 580, I'm running two screens, one at 1600p and one at 1440p without trouble, and they're not duplicated, which should cut down on rendering.

You can definitely hook up a HDMI TV and get video and sound, just need a DVI->HDMI converter. Just plain DVI won't carry sound. Now, if you have a 1080p LCD monitor at your desk, too, it would work especially seamlessly. Either way, just hold down the Windows Key and hit P until it goes to "duplicate" and see what you get.

On the other hand, I have a 30" monitor and a loveseat behind my desk. lol

games would run fine i assume but the desktop icons and OCN text would be too tiny for reading! (assuming youd be setting your res to 1080 in your desktop
