Noob Upgrade Question

Thread Starter
My PC specs are listed below. I am currently considering an upgrade my GPU to a GTX 580. (My 480 is for sale PM me if interested):

1. Will i need to update my MB BIOS?

2. If I do will it ruin my current over clock?

Thanks in advance for any info! GREAT COMMUNITY HERE!

While the 580 is unquestionably a better card, you could oc your 480 to reach equivalent or better than 580 performance. Try an aftermarket cooler or watercooling.

You should probably always keep your MB BIOS up to date, unless there is a known bug with it. It should keep everything the same, but if it doesn't the chip is what matters most in overclocking so it should be able to get back to where you have it now.

Also, is there any particular reason you're not getting another GTX 480 for SLI? It would be cheaper than getting a newer GTX 580 and it would perform better. Your PSU could handle it very well with quite a bit of room to spare.
I understand if you don't want to as single card solutions are always very nice.

Be careful about saying you have something for sale, by the way. If you don't have the required rep or are in the wrong sub-forum it could get you in trouble.

No, you won't need to update your mobo BIOS, not sure where you got that idea.

And No, a different gpu shouldn't have any effect on your CPU OC.

However, a BIOS update can potentially help your CPU OC. It definitely helped my OC.
