i5 750 + Noctua NH-U9B-SE2 = high temps? - Page 3

Great success !

Following the detailed posts Julian, Sp and wake I've managed to greatly improve my OC temps. The oc details are below:
BCLK: 170
VTT: Default
Vcore: 1.200V (Cpu-Z)
+DVID: +0.12500
Multi: x21 (max allowed)

3.6Ghz overclock - so far no fails in prime95 and only 69degrees (and it's hot as hell in here tonight, 26 degrees ambient temp at least).

The reason my BCLK is so low is because I've only got 1333 ram - I was able to reach 185 BCLK on default VTT but with the ram multiplier set to 6x, which was running the ram at 1100. I will definitely look to grab some 1600 ram so that I can increase the BCLK without risking destroying the ram.

So many thanks to everyone who replied, especially Julian and once I get the 1600 ram I'll re-do the OC with increased BCLK and post up my results.

/bow

no problem good man. yes i noticed your ram was 1333, but you could always lower your ram a few mhz below the rated speed which would alow maybe faster timings. 1600 definately makes things match up easier.

I recomend trying to get your bclk higher, its the speed everything talks to eachother, making the system quicker i believe. lowering your ram to 1200mhz really wont make much difference and doing so lets you make the timings tighter, which some people argue is actually more beneficial than just brute force bandwidth but im not very knowledgeable

one more thing, i was able to set 21x too but it just said 20x in windows. i might have been wrong so ill have another look. You can definately however force 21x by forcing turbo mode ON. but doing so prevents speed step and iest, which you want working for dynamic vcore and powersaving features etc......

glad we could help

Yeah I noticed the 21x problem too. It seems that the only way to have 21x is to have Turbo ON. The way I noticed this was playing BF3 and alt-tabbing to CPU-Z, only to find that it was switching between 23x and 24x and saw the cpu running at 3.9 / 4.1Ghz - which caused me to panic and quickly switch off the comp, without looking at the temps (which I should have done).
I actually still had IEST and speed step DISABLED, which was from Linus' video advice, so I'll look to turn them back on.

I'll make a post asking if anyone has figured out a way to just have 21x with Turbo OFF - because that would be ideal.
Edit: I'll also look to increase the BCLK and just leave the ram at 1200~ and see what the performance is like.

aaaaah sorry i totally forgot to mention turn turbo OFF. and dont listen to linus lol. he says that to make it easy to get stable. but you can actually take advantage of those features, thats what dynamic vcore is for, you just have to do a little more tinkering to find a suitable voltage

I actually didnt think turbo mode worked after the bclk and multiplier had been altered, that would be even more advantageous to have working, even more efficiency and power when needed.

with less voltage too.

oh and dont worry, if it was hitting the 23/24 x multiplier its only supposed to be
over one thread, meaning temps should have been fine.

edit: that is weird how turbo was working after you changed bclk and multi, its not supposed to. thats what sets the higher chips apart you see, being higher clocked while still having that feature. im definately going to have a fiddle myself and see if i can get that working

^ yep lol

but personally tho i think higher bclk is regarded as a faster system, so just run the ram at 1200 if you can get 200bclk at 1.21vtt. its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

Just to note i cant believe i never knew that turbo worked with altered bclk, id read many times that it didnt but ive just found that it does like you say.

im considering using it, to make my chip hit 4GHz only when one thread is being used. When 3 or 4 threads are running, for gaming etc.......you really dont need all four cores running at 4GH, 3GH would be sufficient, and 4Gh on single threades apps to speed them up. Might eveb get 4.2 or 4.4 since the chip would require less voltage

more fiddling to do yet Im definately a fan of getting better efficiency and allocating power when its needed

Hehe glad to help
I'll definitely do more tinkering to see if I can get the 200bclk - I should just go out and get some 1600 ram tho, it's cheap as chips nowadays.
