That might not be always work out that well with other models/brands.
As high-end and entry level LEDs for optical sensors vary in price greatly you often get some noname cheap LED with high variations in quality for your money.
This goes especially for red. Unfortunately LEDs are not as easy to identify as microswitches...
Additionally the impact on relative responisbility with i.e. a IR LED could be compensated by tweaking of the settings for the sensor (increasing shutter value) and adjusting of electrical engineering (forward current for IR LED) that might in turn be a bad match for the LED you chose to mod your mouse with (especially higher IR LED forward current might reduce red LED lifecycle).
I would recommend to stay within the same sensor (switching IR and Red LEDs betwen models who use the same sensor).
